River District News
Start - Up Slam
The first RDA Start-Up Slam was fun and inspiring. Nine community members got up and told us about their dreams and ideas for our community. We had people talking about vegan food, New Orleans soul food, drone services, an arts district, sensory toys and products, weight-loss products, and a way to connect our community!

Jody Fitzpatrick from Connect Danville went home with the door money, but even more important were the connections and relationships everyone built. We all met someone new, and learned something new!
Mornings on Main
Mornings on Main
Monday, July 25th @ 10 am

In-person and virtual - RSVP Please!
Topic: River District Arts Festival, organized by Ruby B. Archie Library. Special guests Russel Carter and Jessica Austin.
About this Festival
The mission of this Arts Festival is to celebrate the written, visual, and performance arts, to showcase the many talented artists of Danville, and to highlight the beauty of the River District. While this is an inaugural event, we hope that this festival will take root and expand throughout the years, reflecting Danville’s growth over time.

Get Involved
This year, the festival will take place from September 22 to 24 (additional dates may be added if needed) and will culminate with an interpretive performance of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” at Union Street Park presented by Dean Knight of the Richmond Poe Museum.

River District merchants and community partners interested in hosting a workshop, performance, class, or event that embodies the arts and the mission of the festival can request inclusion to the festival calendar by submitting the information via email to [email protected].
Meet our special guests:
Jessica Austin, Technical Services Librarian, is a Maryland native who has happily called Danville “home” since 2014. She made a career of her passion of reading, and has been employed in private, public and academic libraries for over twenty years. Jessica and her rescue pup, Lucy, enjoy walking the Riverwalk Trail or in the woods at Angler’s Park while listening to audiobooks.
Russell Carter, director of the Danville Public Library System, grew up in Pittsylvania County where he attended Dan River High School and later, Averett University. He has been with the Parks Department for 10 years and has spent the last three as library director. When he’s not at work or reading, Russell enjoys spending time with his wife, Heather, and their two boys, Gabriel and Colton. They enjoy hiking, fishing, camping, and scouting.
