July is Minority Mental Health awareness month?

Mental health refers to our emotional and social well-being and impacts how we think, feel, and behave. It plays a role in connecting with others, making decisions, handling stress, and many other aspects of daily life. Everyone has mental health, and it deserves your attention just as much as your physical health does.

According to the CDC, Mental health issues are more common thank you think, here are some facts:

  • More than 1 in 5 US adults live with a mental illness.
  • Over 1 in 5 youth (ages 13-18) either currently or at some point during their life, have had a seriously debilitating mental illness.
  • About 1 in 25 U.S. adult's lives with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression.

Everyone benefits when people from racial and ethnic minority groups can thrive. We all have a role to play in promoting health equity.

Health equity is the state in which everyone has a fair and just opportunity to attain their highest level of health. Achieving this requires ongoing societal efforts to:

  • Address historical and contemporary injustices.
  • Overcome economic, social, and other obstacles to health and health care.
  • Eliminate preventable health disparities.
