A Home for Secular Saints

July 2025

Welcome back to Sacred Legions, the newsletter! We are so grateful to have each of you with us on our journey of secular sainthood. It has taken a little time to get the newsletter up to speed with the podcast episodes, but new and exciting changes are happening for us, so it's time to share them with you, our faithful readers, listeners, and followers!

To begin, YES! Our ninth episode dropped today, welcoming our good friend, Rev. Matthew Best. You read that right; Matthew represents our first officially non-secular secular saint. We are sure that when you hear his words about working with populations in need of free health care and housing support, you will agree that his work should be recognized by Sacred Legions. On top of that, Rev. Best was integral in inspiring the writing of AND voicing one of the characters of the important gun violence novel, American Roulette.

In today's episode, we explore his unique journey from politics to ministry and discuss the intersection of faith and social justice, particularly in addressing homelessness and healthcare access. He shares insights on the challenges faced by the unhoused and the importance of community trust in providing services. Our conversation also touches on the impact of troubling recent legislation on vulnerable populations. Finally, we touch upon the book American Roulette, a novel which humanizes issues related to mass shootings. This novel will certainly be added to an upcoming social media "Sacred Legions Book Chat" post.

Keeping it short, sweet, and to the point, you can expect to receive more regular updates through our newsletter. In the meantime, thank you all for continuing to read, listen, and follow our efforts to promote volunteerism and self-care through our community of secular saints.
