JULY 2026

This month, the 1889 Foundation continues its commitment to strengthening the health and wellbeing of Cambria and Somerset Counties through investments that expand access to healthcare, support veterans, combat food insecurity, and encourage healthy community engagement. From helping launch new healthcare services and expanding outreach to rural veterans to investing in mental resiliency programs and supporting local families, these initiatives demonstrate the Foundation's dedication to creating meaningful, lasting impact. As we look ahead, we invite community members and organizations to join us for upcoming events that celebrate collaboration, education, and family wellbeing.

Grants Awarded

The 1889 Foundation continues to invest in programs that improve access to healthcare, strengthen support systems for veterans and families, and enhance the quality of life for residents throughout Cambria and Somerset Counties.

The 1889 Foundation has awarded a $500,000 grant to Hyndman Area Health Center to support the Johnstown Family Health Center and Regional Dental Training Center.

This investment will help expand access to high quality primary and dental care while addressing the growing shortage of dental professionals in rural Pennsylvania. The Regional Dental Training Center, developed in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine and Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, will serve as a hub for training future dental residents, hygienists, and assistants while increasing access to oral healthcare services for communities across the region.

Pitt Dental is currently recruiting dental hygiene and dental assistants for the Regional Dental Training Center. Dental hygiene students will need to complete one year of prerequisite courses through Penn Highlands before they can start the dental training next fall. There are still spots available!

A $75,000 grant has been awarded to Veterans Community Initiatives in support of its Veterans Rural Outreach Program. The program connects veterans living in rural communities with critical resources and services, helping them navigate challenges related to healthcare, housing, employment, and overall wellbeing while ensuring they receive the support they have earned through their service.

The 1889 Foundation has awarded $15,000 to the Somerset County Mobile Food Bank to help expand access to nutritious food for individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. Through mobile distribution sites, the organization delivers essential groceries to underserved communities, helping ensure residents have reliable access to healthy meals.

The 1889 Foundation has awarded $7,500 to Second Chance Fundraising to cover registration costs for all participants ages 17 and younger in the 10th Annual 5K Run/Walk supporting organ, tissue, and cornea donation awareness. By removing financial barriers for youth participants, the Foundation is helping encourage community involvement while educating the next generation about the life changing impact of organ and tissue donation.

The 1889 Foundation is proud to spotlight the Mindful Pause Initiative, an innovative mental fitness and resiliency program led by Outdoor Odyssey that is making a lasting impact on professionals who serve our communities every day.

Funded by the 1889 Foundation, Mindful Pause was created to equip participants with practical tools to better understand stress, strengthen resiliency, and improve overall mental wellness. Building on Outdoor Odyssey's decades of experience developing leaders through experiential learning and resiliency training, the program brings together professionals in a supportive environment where they learn strategies to regulate stress, build stronger connections, and return to their workplaces better prepared to serve others.

Since its launch, more than 150 participants have completed the Mindful Pause program, including many first responders, counselors, educators, healthcare professionals, and other community leaders. Each participant leaves with practical techniques they can immediately apply in both their personal and professional lives, creating a ripple effect that extends well beyond Outdoor Odyssey's campus.

The program's impact continues to grow. Four participants have chosen to take the next step by pursuing advanced Mental Fitness and Resiliency training, allowing them to share what they have learned with others and expand the reach of the program throughout the region. Their commitment reflects the long term vision of the initiative: creating local leaders who can foster healthier, more resilient workplaces and communities.

“Being part of the Mindful Pause Initiative, and now subsequently going through the Mental Fitness and Resiliency training, has given me an opportunity to step back, reflect, and learn practical strategies that I can carry with me both personally and professionally. The work we do at the YMCA is centered on supporting the wellbeing of others, and this training is a valuable reminder that we also need to make space for our own mental health and resiliency. I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue learning through the advanced training and to bring these tools back to our team and our community.” says Ann Gustkey, CEO of Greater Johnstown Community YMCA.

Through investments like Mindful Pause, the 1889 Foundation continues to support innovative programs that strengthen the wellbeing of those who dedicate their lives to serving others, creating healthier individuals, stronger organizations, and more resilient communities.
