“If you take care of the minutes, the years take care of themselves.” – Tibetan saying

Dear Suzanne,

A few days ago, I returned from walking a segment of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela (technically the Chemin de Saint Jacques de Puy, in France). I co-led a small group of women, and while the journey brought 14-mile days, blisters, and near 90-degree temperatures, it also offered deep conversation, introspection, and transformation for the participants and for me.

To get through some of the most challenging days, I found myself returning to the most basic things: each step, the beauty around me, and my breath. It was a moving meditation. A chance to practice mindfulness, moment by moment.

Shortly after returning home, I read a piece by psychologist Rick Hanson on the benefits of mindfulness and cultivating a positive mindset. He referenced the Tibetan proverb: “If you take care of the minutes, the years take care of themselves.” Like a tuning fork of truth and peace, the quote hummed in me.

Reflecting on my Camino experience, I was struck by how I could hold both the heartbreak of world events and the beauty of the path before me. I followed the news, limited myself to just a few minutes each day, and also found myself immersed in laughter, connection, and awe. There was room for both. I didn’t need to deny one to hold the other.

That’s what mindfulness offers us: inner space and steadiness. The ability to stay grounded through global turmoil or personal challenges. To manage the small, immediate things—like blister care, group dynamics, and leadership—in ways that anchor us to the present. And in taking care of each step, the miles truly did take care of themselves.

I share this because I believe we all have the capacity to hold complexity—both the pain of the world and the wonder of life. With mindfulness, we can tune into the sacredness of a quiet moment, even as we face uncertainty or unrest.

You don’t need to be walking a trail in France.

Simple things that bring us into the present moment can act as the glue to hold us together when we feel as if we might unravel.

You can breathe deeply during a difficult meeting, pause to notice the light in the leaves, or smile thinking about someone you love. You can feel what’s hard and still choose to witness beauty, extend kindness, or take a moment to stretch your legs and reset. These small, conscious choices help keep us steady through the challenges.

What are some of the ways you create mindful moments in your day?

Here is a suggestion to build your mindfulness practice:

  • Schedule three “mindfulness breaks” a day—tiny pauses to breathe, reflect, or just be. Put them in your calendar.
  • Each time you take one, mark it with a heart, dot, or symbol to say “I cared for the minutes.”
  • Over time, see how those moments shift your energy and presence.

If you’d like to explore how to reduce stress, build emotional resilience, and bring more clarity and steadiness to your life—I’d love to talk to you and see if coaching might be the powerful support you or a loved one need.
