We went to camp!
BeHERE staff, Dr. Sara Hunt and Dr. Jill Manit, had the pleasure and privilege of attending the 2024 F.A.R.M. Camp in Chadron, Nebraska.
In its 11th year now, the Frontier and Rural Mental Health (FARM) Camp was founded by Dr. Catherine Jones-Hazledine. Initially started as a passion project in response to local needs, Dr. Jones-Hazledine and her organization, Western Nebraska Behavioral Health (WNBH) have collaborated with the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska (BHECN) to bring youth to Chadron State College to learn about careers in behavioral health, build pre-professional skills, and form a bonded cohort of youth who care about the needs of their community. FARM Camp continues as a joint project between WNBH and the BHECN Panhandle site, co-directed by Dr. Tara Wilson of Chadron State College and Dr. Jones-Hazledine.
Dr. Cate (as the youth endearingly call her), Dr. Wilson, the clinician team, and the youth welcomed BeHERE NV to their week-long camp so that we may, some day, replicate their good work in Nevada.
Campers participated in activities, college-level classroom learning, and met an array of enthusiastic local providers who came to speak with them. The youth astutely asked each provider what they do to take care of themselves too. Have you thought about your own self-care lately?
The transformation over the course of the week was striking. The youth developed confidence and identity as future mental health providers while bonding with one another. The youth expressed an appreciation for the open and supportive environment created by Dr. Cate and the staff.
We are thankful to Dr. Cate, Dr. Wilson, the staff and clinicians of Western Nevada Behavioral Health, and the staff of the BHECN Panhandle site for generously sharing their insights, materials, and tips. We sincerely hope to honor their good work with our own replication of FARM Camp in Nevada!
