Color Comes on the First Switchback

I have been aching for the trails.

Coming home from the road trip has taken some adjusting. To our place. To the heat. To the many trips carrying everything back from the van into the house. To Palm Springs drivers who could alarm the taxi drivers of Mumbai. There is a hum of edginess in me, and beneath it the small, familiar fear that I may have nothing left to write about.

The angst of youth and middle age has softened. Angst was always good raw material. Age has brought less turmoil and more nonchalance—easier to live with, harder to shape into words.

The morning is cool.

I leave before dawn. There is enough light to see the rocks, but not yet their color. Color comes on the first steep switchback—orange and red rising out of grey, as if the mountain is remembering itself.

It has been months since I last climbed. I am breathing hard, wondering whether I can still do this. My legs betray me slowly, year after year, and I am anxious to learn how much ground they have given up. Yesterday’s heat still lifts from the trail. I am grateful for the thin mercy of cool air moving across my skin.

There is only the rhythmic thud of my boots against dirt and rock and, far below, the low buzz of early traffic.

I go slowly. I stop. I keep going.

By the time I reach the rusting metal sign, the trail has done what it always does. It has stripped the foolish thoughts from me. My breathing slows. Something wordless opens. Not in me exactly. Around me.

The Japanese call it *mushin*—the moment when the inner commentator loosens its grip. Thoughts still come, but I do not have to follow them. I do not have to turn each moment into a judgment or explanation. I am no longer standing apart from the experience, narrating it to myself.

I am simply here, meeting what is in front of me.

The sun comes over the ridge, touching the edges of the clouds with gold. The palms below me, purple in the half-light, turn green. I watch a ram moving in the distance. A runner passes my perch without seeing me. Five minutes later, he passes the ram without breaking stride or seeing him.

I turn south.

Eight bighorn sheep have gathered silently behind me.

They gaze and chew.

They regard me with ancient indifference.

I understand their place here. Mine is less clear.

We are both sentient. We both feel. But unlike me, they do not appear to search for a purpose.

They are their purpose.

Do they ever stop beneath the Milky Way and look up? Can beauty interrupt them as it interrupts me?

The skin of everyday life loosens. The boxes, the traffic, the worry about my legs, the question of usefulness, the need to make meaning from every breath—all of it falls away.

The sheep keep chewing.

I stand there, unable to look away.

Maybe this is one of our purposes.

To be stopped.

To be opened.

To let beauty find the soft place and enter.

Life pivots in such moments.

The liveness in me just loves to feel the liveness in growing things, in grass and rain and leaves and flowers and sun and feathers and furs and earth and sand and moss.

WOMEN WHO LIFTED THE BAR

Martha Graham didn’t ask the body to look graceful. She made it clench, twist, buckle, lunge, and break open again. Her technique grew from contraction and release; across 181 ballets, those movements carried fear, grief, hunger, and rage into the room. Medea, Joan of Arc, Emily Dickinson came onstage with their force intact, not softened into pretty shapes.

(marthagraham.org)

She lived her truth with her whole body. In 1926, when it was still unusual for a woman to lead a dance company, Graham founded hers in a small Carnegie Hall studio. For its first twelve years, the company was made up entirely of women. She shaped the dances, costumes, and music, and kept performing into her mid-seventies. She didn’t wait for permission or hand over the vision. She built a place where women could take the floor, breathe hard, and move with their full weight.

Her choices reached beyond the studio. In 1936, Graham declined an invitation to dance at the Berlin Olympics, writing that she could not identify with a regime that persecuted artists and noting that some of her dancers would not be welcome in Germany. Her company later included Japanese American dancer Yuriko; in 1951, Mary Hinkson and Matt Turney became its first two Black dancers. She did not separate the work from the world it moved through.

BAD DOG

February 26 - March 13, 2027 at The Bent

written and directed by Jennifer Hoppe-House

After years of being clean and sober, Molly Drexler drives her Prius through the house, leaving a sedan-sized hole in the wall that serves as a metaphor for what can no longer be ignored. When her beleaguered wife gets her home from the hospital, Molly’s far-flung and riotous family are descending for an intervention, and as the events of her blackout emerge, her family tries to cope with her wreckage, and in the process, runs headlong into their own. This is BAD DOG. The Bent is proud to present the west coast premiere of this powerful story wrapped in barbed wire.

The Outlaws — Prime Video

The Outlaws starts with a deliciously simple premise: seven strangers sentenced to community service in Bristol, all of whom would probably avoid one another voluntarily.

What begins as comedy soon wanders into crime, bad decisions and genuine danger. Stephen Merchant is wonderfully awkward, Jessica Gunning is terrific as the overconfident supervisor, and Christopher Walken drifts through the series with his usual strange, deadpan magic.

Beneath the jokes, the show has real warmth. It is about people discovering that the person they had neatly labeled Idiot, Snob, Criminal or Impossible is more complicated than expected.

Funny, dark, tense and surprisingly tender. A very enjoyable place to spend a few evenings with people you would absolutely refuse to serve on a committee with.

The Palm Springs Women’s Jazz and Blues Assoc. exists to preserve and foster an appreciation of jazz and blues music and to support female jazz and blues musicians who traditionally struggle for recognition and employment. The festival includes concerts, exhibits, presentations, films, and other events that promote an understanding and enjoyment of the work of women artists.

Women Only Travel Groups

Somewhere out there right now is a woman in her sixties buying her first backpack, another quietly leaving a marriage and booking a hiking trip to Iceland, and another realizing she was never “too old,” merely booked that walking trip in England.

Adventure companies probably think they sell itineraries. Half the time they’re actually selling permission.
