Hello 2023!
Happy New Year, everyone! We are so excited about the new year here at Limoneira, and we're convinced it'll be the best one yet! This year we'll continue to share all things Limoneira! We'll be celebrating 130 wonderful years of Limoneira. Our newsletters will keep you up to date on our sustainable practices, our involvement in the community, and we'll be sharing more delicious and nutritious recipes featuring your favorite Limoneira citrus. We hope you'll come along with us for the ride!

First Annual Growers' Appreciation Dinner!
Limoneira held its first Annual Growers' Appreciation Dinner on December 7th at the Spanish Hills Club in Camarillo. Over 130 people attended, including growers and their families, Limoneira Board members, and management. The night started with a happy hour, followed by dinner, which allowed many people to meet face-to-face for the first time. This gave everyone an opportunity to ask questions of Limoneira staff. A big thanks to employees from the Marketing, Field, and Shop Departments for organizing, setting up, and breaking down the event. Everyone enjoyed sharing this time together!

Pollinator Islands
A hive of activity is happening in the orchards! Part of Limoneira's 130 years of success is its focus on working with the natural environment. Limoneira plants a corridor with pollinator and insect-friendly floral plants every ten trees and every five rows in its orchards. This feeds and promotes thriving and beneficial insect colonies that suppress pests.

Over 400 islands throughout the orchards in Ventura County create year-round biological corridors and food sources for insects. Limoneira's native plant mix includes California poppy, Arroyo Lupine, and Gopher Stopper. Vince Giacolone, Director of Southern Farming, said, "Typically when you think of insects, you think of their negative effects. However, different types of insects (decomposers, pollinators, predators, etc.) complement each other to increase the biological balance in an orchard." Learn more about our biological corridors here!

The Magic of Mulching
Limoneira has partnered with Agromin Corporation to close the green waste recycling loop. Limoneira recycles 100% of our green waste in California. A 20-acre facility on Limoneira land receives over 200 tons of organic green waste from Ventura county every day. In weight, that's the equivalent of about 100 elephants!

This organic green waste includes materials like grass and tree clippings. These can be turned into mulch that is spread along the orchard. Mulch reduces water loss, reduces weeds, helps moderate soil temperature, and sequesters carbon.

Sustainable land stewardship is at the heart of Limoneira's core practices; mulching is just one example. Thanks to mulching, Limoneira can grow the best citrus while doing the best for the land!

Limoneira and the Community
Limoneira is committed to serving our community. We pride ourselves in collaborating with different organizations that serve the community. This month we want to highlight: Lemonade Day!

Limoneira has been a proud sponsor of Lemonade Day for years! Lemonade Day quite literally teaches young entrepreneurs how to take Limoneira® Lemons and make them into lemonade. It's an organization that teaches young entrepreneurs how to start, own, and operate their own business—a lemonade stand. This experience teaches kids valuable life skills that they can carry with them into adulthood. We love being able to be a part of the development of the future generation!

Home Sweet Home
Last month, Limoneira participated in the Ventura County Farm Worker Housing Bus Tour!

This tour was hosted by House Farm Workers! The tour kicked off in Rancho Verde in Saticoy, where participants heard from residents about the importance of safe, decent, and affordable housing. The tour made its way to Limoneira, where participants went on a driving tour of our workforce housing. We then hosted a delicious lunch followed by a panel discussing the challenges to affordable farmworker housing. Then, participants were invited to take a walking tour of Limoneira with our Director of Housing & Commercial Operations, Rosie Castillo. Finally, the tour closed out with a visit to Somis.

Limoneira endeavors to ensure our workers' housing is safe, decent, and affordable. We are pleased to have participated in such an important event bringing knowledge and awareness about worker housing! Click here to see more!

Limoneira & Food Share
Limoneira has partnered with Food Share to serve the farmworker community! We have been able to serve seniors through our senior kit program for the last four months, which has been a great experience. This past month we were able to host our first distribution event that was open to all residents. We were able to serve about 100 families! We gave out food boxes and $50 Vons gift certificates. We cannot wait to develop this relationship with Food Share further and hope to continue serving the community every month!

What In The World
All around the world, people usher in the New Year with different traditions: eating 12 grapes at midnight, having a New Year's kiss, and many more. Here at Limoneira, we're a little partial to the Lemon pig!

These adorable lemon pigs are simply a lemon carved to look like a pig. Its mouth holds a coin, its legs are four toothpicks, its eyes are made of cloves, and its curly tail is made of aluminum foil.

This tradition goes all the way back to the late 19th century as a fun craft for children or amusement at dinner parties. In the 1970s, the idea was adopted for the holidays. Now they're thought to bring good luck in the new year. Whether you make one in hopes of good luck or simply for fun—it's a great activity for everyone in the family to attempt to make their own lemon pig.

May these little lemon piggies bring you good luck in the new year!
