The National Convention will be August 28-September 3, 2026, in Louisville, KY.


Delegates and Alternates were elected at the Spring District Conference. Those not elected as Delegates or Alternates can attend the National Convention as a guest.


Registration information, instructions, and forms are available on the Department website.


The deadline for National Convention registration is June 15.


2026 Retiree Appreciation Day


On Thursday, August 13th, 2026, from 0700 to approximately 1230 hours the US Army Fort McCoy Retirement Services Office and the Central Iowa Military Retiree Council (CIMRC) will sponsor a Retiree Appreciation Day (RAD).


This event will be held at American Legion Post 403, 910 Main Street, Van Meter, IA 50261. Get updated information on military retiree benefits, TRICARE, Dental, VA eligibility and programs, funeral planning, financial planning and more.


There will be a representative present from the Iowa Veterans Cemetery. If you have an interest in pre-registering for veteran burial benefits, please review the application on their website at https://dva.iowa.gov/iowa-veterans-cemetery. The following documents will need to be provided as well: DD214 or NGB-22, and marriage certificate if applicable.


This is a free event; there is no cost to attend. However, pre-registration is requested to ensure an accurate headcount for vendors, a continental breakfast, and seating. If interested, please email your name, phone number and if you will be bringing a guest to: centraliowamilitaryretirees@gmail.com – by August 1, 2026.

2026 Department Convention

July 17-19, 2026


All meetings will be held at the Holiday Inn Des Moines Airport. Ask for the American Legion rate when making reservations.

Department Convention


American Legion and SAL members can save time in the registration line at Department Convention by pre-registering online. Have your payment made and your badge pre-printed and waiting for you.


Cutoff for advance registration is July 9 at 12:00 pm.

Legionnaire of the Year


The Art McLauglin Legionnaire of the Year nomination forms is available on our website. There is no limitation on the number of applicants for each District. Nomination forms must be submitted to Department Headquarters before June 15.

Department Leadership School Attended by 68 Legion/SAL Members


The Department Leadership School was held May 29-31 at the Holiday Inn Des Moines Airport. Emerging leaders received instruction and training throughout the weekend as they prepare for leadership roles for the 2026-2027 year.

Consolidated Post Reports


The Consolidated Post Reports (CPR) have been mailed to each Post Adjutant on record. The Consolidated Post Report must be returned on the correct annual form to Department Headquarters or submitted through myLegion.org (preferred) before June 15 to be considered for Department Community Service and Children & Youth Awards.


Posts wishing to be considered for Community Service and Children & Youth Awards need to provide a narrative of their activities with their CPR submission. Narratives may be submitted separately if your post’s CPR is submitted electronically.


Awards will be presented during the Department Convention.

National Legion College

The 2026 National Legion College class is scheduled for November 15-20, 2026.


The Department of Iowa is currently seeking two candidates. The prerequisites to apply for the National American Legion College are as follows:

  • Current member in good standing for at least 3 consecutive years
  • Demonstrates leadership potential
  • Capable of developing/facilitating training
  • Completed American Legion Basic Training and certificate is included with application
  • Application is completed correctly and accurately by applicant
  • Submitted by Department of Iowa deadline of July 1.
