WOMEN HIT THE HARDEST
A few friends and I have been watching the statistics affecting women's job retention during this Pandemic.
We were concerned that women would be hit the hardest especially since women dominate the health care, service and hotel businesses.
Nehama Jacobs, friend and author of Success & Betrayal, was the first of us to see the #'s Finally An article in The Washington Post on May 9 spelled it all out.
First a little history; During the Recession of 2008-2010 Men lost more jobs then women. It was actually called the Mancession. That was because construction and manufacturing was the hardest hit.
During Covid-19 the hardest hit are food service workers, day-care workers, hairstylists, hotel workers, Dental Hygienists and admins are among the 20.5 Million+ people who watched their jobs dissapear.
The
Bureau of Labor Statistics, which started reporting unemployment data in 1948, says the 16.2 percent women's unemployment in April was 3 points higher then men's. Hispanic and African American Women lost jobs in disproportionate rates.
Although I do not have data for other countries yet I expect it will be similar and in some countries worse.
We know
that the women at the
Before the Pandemic women held 77 % of jobs in education and health services but they account for 83% of the jobs lost in those sectors!
In true Susan Style I do have a few suggestions to help women during these times:
1. Hire women
2. Spend your dollars at Women Owned Businesses they hire more women.
3. Donate to organizations like One Fair Wage (onefairwage.com) They support women who work primarily for tips.
4. Support all Bills, local and national, that support programs to shore up wages and finances of employers that hire a preponderance of women.
5. Lastly women in other countries like Uganda are having a really tough time right now.
Karon Wright of The Greater Contribution reported this recently;
"The very vulnerable women whom The Greater Contribution works with in Uganda had been doing so well, establishing small businesses, sending more children to school, eating more than one meal a day, really working hard to lift themselves out of poverty, really soaring! But with the arrival of the COVID-19 epidemic they have all experienced huge setbacks. Their government has instituted a severe country wide shut down, closing all public events, closing all market places and prohibiting any vehicle traffic on the roads. While these have been necessary measures and have kept the infection rate very low, they have also had a very adverse effect on the population.
The closing of the markets has had the most severe impact. The great majority of our micro loan borrowers sell their wares in the large market places (see attached photo) and now cannot do that. In addition, without electricity or refrigerators they must buy food for their meals each day at these same markets.
So, bottom line, no markets, no business, no income, no food!
So find world wide programs like
www.thegreatercontribution.com
To support women less comfortable then you so they can also survive this Pandemic.
Let me know if you have any other suggestions I can pass along to all the graduates. This Pandemic does not need to set women back if we all step up for our fellow women!
