The VOS Conference Starts in Just 199 Days!
Dear VOS members,
Mark your calendars! The 2020 VOS Conference at Sun Valley starts in just 199 days! We have a great program shaping up, and you don't want to miss a minute of it.
On Saturday, February 1, we will have a lovely
Welcome Reception where you can mingle with colleagues, eat great food, enjoy a cocktail or two, pick up your registration materials, and get ready for the start of the conference. Sunday, February 2 is a special day: It is
Day 1 of our conference and it is Super Bowl Sunday! To accommodate both of these great events, we have scheduled our opening scientific session to begin earlier than usual, at 1 p.m. running to 3 p.m. Our
Jacques Jenny Lecture will take place 3-4 p.m., followed by our
Exhibitors' Showcase Super Bowl Party.
Before you get all excited about the huge projection screens and delicious foods that we will allow us to enjoy a true Super Bowl experience from kick-off through half time, let's talk about the Jacques Jenny Lecturer for 2020.
Dr. Leesa Galatz, chair of the department of orthopedics at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City, will talk to us about the current science and cutting edge techniques she applies for patients with shoulder and/or elbow issues. Dr. Galatz's primary research interest throughout her career has been basic science of rotator cuff disease and tendon healing as it pertains to cuff repair. She is a co-primary investigator on two major projects funded by the National Institutes of Health which focus on rotator cuff degeneration and repair, and tissue engineering strategies for tendon repair.
Monday and Tuesday will run as usual with great lectures, wet labs, excellent winter sports right outside our doors, and our Jacques Jenny lecture each evening. Wednesday will feature more science, the
annual ski race and on-mountain picnic,
Jacques Jenny lecture, as well as our always well-received
Foundation Night. This is your chance to enjoy great food and drinks while spending time with our poster presenters, bidding on silent auction items, and then settling in for the entertainment for the night ... and this will be some great entertainment! How about a
TED talk, by former astronaut
Cady Coleman? A chemist with a doctorate in polymer science and engineering, Cady is a pioneer in the research of materials science, biotechnology, combustion science, and fluid physics. Onstage, she draws from her time in NASA and her missions on the International Space Station to discuss team-building, leadership, and innovation. With her extraordinary photos and videos, Cady delivers a captivating account of life in space and the importance of diversity, inclusion, and collaboration.
Thursday will find us enjoying more science, more labs, more winter sports..and the all-important business meeting followed by our
BIGGEST event of the week: The Awards Banquet which will also be known as
Maralyn Probst's Official Retirement Party. What?!?! ... This is a must-attend event! Ever been a resident who needed a bit of help getting your abstract submitted on time? Ever discovered that you forgot to register for the conference? Ever needed a hand finding your way around the conference? Ever been on the board of directors and, frankly, depended upon Maralyn to do the real heavy lifting? Well, this is your chance to say "Thank you!" and "Congratulations, Maralyn!"
 Friday will have a full day of science, skiing, and camaraderie. It's not too early to start scheduling your time off to attend the best VOS Conference of all time!

VOS continues to offer advertising space in the electronically delivered newsletters.
Advertisers may choose to place an ad for one billing cycle, which covers three newsletter issues, or select a discounted annual package, which covers nine newsletter issues.
VOS offers vertical banner ad space in addition to horizontal banner ad space. Horizontal and vertical banner ads are available in two sizes (single-height or double-height), and each ad may be linked to the advertiser's website homepage or other web page.

SUBMIT VOS RESEARCH GRANT APPLICATIONS

Research Chair
Description: The VOS Hohn-Johnson and Wade O. Brinker Research Awards fund research in musculoskeletal conditions in animals.
Funding: The Hohn-Johnson award is limited to $40,000. The Wade O. Brinker Resident award is limited to $12,000.
Hohn-Johnson and
Wade O. Brinker award principal investigators must be active members of the VOS as of 1st of September in the year of application.
Review Process
: The VOS research committee reviews the proposals, which are evaluated using the following criteria:
- Relevance to VOS goals and priorities
- Scientific and technical quality of the idea
- Scientific and technological quality of the methods
- Feasibility of accomplishing objectives within the proposed time line
- Relevance of objectives to current literature
Awards: The outcome of the VOS research committee review will be presented to the Spring VOS Board of Directors and a decision of funding announced at the annual VOS meeting.

47th Annual Veterinary Orthopedic Society Conference
February 1-8, 2020 at Sun Valley, Idaho

We invite practitioners, academicians, and researchers interested in large animal, small animal, and exotic species, to submit abstracts of novel studies in practical and scientific topics related to veterinary orthopedics and traumatology. Preference will be given to abstracts that have clinical relevance. Papers addressing results of controlled retrospective and prospective clinical studies are strongly encouraged. Clinician investigators should also consider submitting innovative surgical techniques, or case reports describing unusual or difficult cases as these will be reviewed separate from the scientific abstracts. Presentations will be limited to
10 minutes and followed by 5 minutes of discussion. Posters must fit within the 4' (height) x 4' (width) area provided.
Call for papers will open on August 1, 2019 and close on September 15, 2019 for both podium presentations and posters. See the link on the VOS website:

Submission categories will be:
- Clinical/Scientific Studies
- Case reports: a maximum of three novel or interesting cases
The Mark S. Bloomberg Memorial Resident Research Award was established to recognize outstanding resident abstract submissions to the scientific program. At least one recipient per year will be awarded up to $1,500.00 towards expenses to attend and present their abstract at our annual meeting. Only individuals currently in a residency training program or within 2 years of completion of a formal residency program are eligible. The abstract submission may only be of studies conducted during the residency program. All abstracts being submitted for consideration of this award must indicate so on online submission form.
The Student/Intern Research Award was established to recognize outstanding student or intern abstract submissions to the scientific program. One recipient per year will be awarded (depending on abstract quality) up to $1,500.00 towards expenses to attend and present their abstract at our annual meeting. Only individuals currently in a DVM or Intern training program or within 1 year of completion of a formal internship or DVM program are eligible. The work must be performed as a student or intern. All abstracts being submitted for consideration of this award must indicate so on online submission form.
