June Monthly Dinner

Gary Corippo's Last Fundraiser

Museum Founder

Wednesday June 5th, 2024

No Host Bar: 5:30 p.m., Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m.

On behalf of Estrella Warbirds Museum, Woodland Auto Display and the Corippo family we are announcing a Celebration of Life on behalf of Gary Corippo to be held on Wednesday, 6/5/24 in Hangar One from 5:30 to 8:00 PM. This Celebration will take the place of our regular monthly dinner so you need to sign up for the dinner by making reservations at ewarbirds.org and scroll through events to monthly dinners and pay the usual monthly dinner price.

The Corippo family would like this to be an opportunity for those who knew him (or knew of him) to come out and spotlight what he did to make this museum become a success. There will be no keynote speaker that night, it will be Gary in the spotlight!

The Corippo family would like for those who knew him to come out and help spotlight what he did to make the museum a success. During the event there will be an opportunity to bid on some personal historical artifacts of Gary's to benefit the museum and maybe have something to keep Gary's memory with you. The Corripo family will also be allowing Gary to buy your first adult beverage for which they are generously paying for. You can also click here to make a financial donation to the museum in Gary's honor.

Gary, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, was one of the founders of our museum and played an integral role in collecting most of what you see displayed. His passion for collecting and preserving military artifacts is unparalleled. He truly believed that displaying artifacts to tell the stories of those who sacrificed for our freedom and way of life really matters.

Dinners are catered and open to the public ($25/person), and reservations are required prior to 6 p.m., Monday prior to dinner, either On-line HERE or call 805 296-1935.

Honoring Veterans - Through The Skies

  • What: Inaugural Legacy Flight
  • When: Thursday, June 6th, 2024
  • Time: 10: a.m. - 1 p.m.

Sherm Smoot, a veteran of the Vietnam War and a skilled Navy fighter pilot, airline pilot, and race pilot at Reno Air Races, held a deep reverence for fellow veterans. He passionatelly paid tribute to their service by piloting historic aircraft, like the renowned, "Betsy's Biscuit Bomber." The image above captures veterans who flew with Sherman on his final flight. In his honor, Smoot's Legacy Flight will endure each year on June 6th, commemorating his memory with a min-flight over San Luis Obispo County. More Information available here.

Memorial Day Activities

The Estrella Warbirds Museum was well represented this past Memorial Day weekend. Our three volunteer pilots, George Marrett, Bob Kelly, and Scott Stelze, all donate their time, aircraft, fuel. They completed six Memorial Day Flyovers honoring our fallen veterans with flights for the opening on each day of the Santa Margarita's "Best of the West Event" which ran from Friday May 24th to Sunday May 26th. On Memorial day, Flyover coverage encompassed three locations; the Atascadero Veterans Memorial Celebration, and the Templeton and Paso Robles Cemetery Celebrations. They finished out Memorial day at the Cayucos “Lost at Sea” Celebration. Each flyover was performed in a “missing man” formation with the third plane flying up and out of the formation, symbolizing an aerial salute to the fallen. As a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit, all donations made for these flyover events goes directly to the Museum. Thank you Pilots for representing the Estrella Warbirds Museum well. We are so proud!

Warbirds Wings & Wheels 15 +

National Motor Fest 2

The 15th annual Warbirds, Wings & Wheels, on May 11, 2024! This was the first-time collaboration between Estrella Warbirds Museum and Stier Events LLC, and included National Motor Fest! A heartfelt "Thank You!" goes out to anyone whom had anything to do with the planning, set-up, production and cleanup after the event! Your help was very much appreciated!

Check out all the pictures located online here where you can see winners, request high resolution copies (if available) of any vehicle or if you have pictures to share, you can also upload them to us for publication on the website.

As is with any new event, we know there are always things that people like, some you may not have liked or even suggestions we can consider when planning next years event. We tried some new things. What worked for you, what didn't? Your personal opinions are highly appreciated. We want to know what you think! Personal identification or even emails are not captured unless you request a personal response. Your response to this survey is greatly appreciated!

winners2024 image

Although not known at the time this image was taken, there are actually three winning classes of vehicles shown. In the foreground is David Warren's Special Interest vehicle entry, a 1967 Go Cart covered with a replica mini VW Bus. In the background to the left is Glen Barker's 1956 Jaguar D Type, which was chosen by EWM Presidential Choice Award and for the first time in our 15 year history, the same vehicle was also chosen as the Woodland Best of Show award! At no time did the Woodland's nor John Couch (and his son) consult the other on choice. Congratulations goes out to all 2024 class winners. A full list of winners can be found here.

Our congratulations go out to Jon!

Stay tuned, as following that, a very famous west coast midget has been donated to the Woodland Auto Display collection and could make an appearance soon. Awesome! The museum just keeps growing! You will need to guess which one!
