JUNE 16, 2025 ANNOUNCEMENT

If you are interested in serving as the volunteer Co-Regional for SCBWI Wisconsin, please email Patricia Wiles, SCBWI’s Director of Regional Team Management, at patriciawiles@scbwi.org to request an application by July 1, 2025. Please write “Co-RA Wisconsin” in the subject line.

Along with the application, you’ll receive an application information booklet that describes an RA’s duties and responsibilities.

  • You must be a current premium (paid) member of SCBWI to apply for any Regional Team position;
  • You must reside within the geographic boundaries of the region in order to serve as a member of the Regional Team; and
  • You cannot be an editor, agent, art director, owner of a publishing company, or hold any other type of employment or business ownership that could be considered a conflict of interest.

This is a volunteer (unpaid) role, but it comes with perks and opportunities. Here are some of them:

  • RAs receive free membership in SCBWI during their time of service; after they retire, they receive one year of free membership for each year of service.
  • RAs may be eligible for free or reduced registration for SCBWI’s international conferences, as well as at many regional events everywhere in the world.
  • RAs may be eligible for travel reimbursements for international conferences, and for professional development grants that are available only to Regional Team members.
  • RAs may participate in leadership training and special craft-focused programs that help build confidence as a leader and a creator.
  • RAs also meet industry professionals such as editors, agents, and publicists.

Many Regional Advisors will tell you that some of the most meaningful rewards are those that are most personal:

  • Playing an active role in nurturing your creative community
  • Forging connections and even lifelong friendships with other creatives from around the world
  • Knowing you are making a difference in a group that is passionate about literacy and enhancing the canon of literature and art for young readers, and
  • Belonging to the supportive, enthusiastic Global network of SCBWI's Regional Teams.

Historically, SCBWI’s leadership and membership have not fully reflected the diverse population of children’s book writers to include religious and cultural minorities, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, nationality, socioeconomic differences, disability, language, neuroatypicality, etc. While we value those leaders and members who reflect/have reflected underrepresented groups, we recognize that we can and must do better. We want all of our members to be represented and to feel heard. If you are a member of an underrepresented group, we encourage you to apply.

If you’re not interested in the RA position, please let me know if you’d like to be considered for future volunteer openings in your region, or if you’d simply like to become more involved. We want to hear from you!

This email is going to all active members of the Wisconsin region. If you know of someone who did not receive it, please have them write to me right away.

Questions? Please write to me wisconsin-ra@scbwi.org or to Patricia Wiles, Director of Regional Team Management, at patriciawiles@scbwi.org

Sincerely,

Joyce Uglow

The Artistry of Craft Conference

SEPTEMBER 27, 2025

It’s time to gather, learn, network, laugh, and add artistry of craft enhancements. Come for the thought-provoking message in Jacqui Davison’s UNLESS… keynote. We know layers add to the quality of our art. So, sit up for added inspiration and motivation and encouragement in Susan Johnston Taylor's keynote. Take time to shop for books, admire artwork, and get faculty members’ books signed. Chat with old friends and make new connections. Enjoy a bite to eat, compare stories. Take copious notes during ingenious workshops by fabulous SCBWI creatives.

IN PERSON

Picture book writers, add to your craft with The Art of the Art Notes with PB author, Katie Venit. Writers of all kinds, take your manuscript to the next level with writer Shannon Schuren. Novelists, add to your emotional arcs with Ann Angel. Laugh right out loud and get wild with creativity with Silvia Acevedo. Now, that's a day of artistry! Susan Johnston Taylor will wrap things up for the day.

A small - but mighty artful- conference

right here in WI.

We are going to gather in Wisconsin Dells, but there’s a place you may know called Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle, WA. Pike Place happily operates via its "Fish Philosophy". That is to say that they act intentionally via the notions of: Play, Make Their Day, Choose Your Attitude, and Be There. We KIDLIT writers and illustrators craft our art in much the same way. We know that making a difference in the lives of kids flows through our high quality books and art.

We are all about being there for others.

We play with words and images.

We choose to create and be there for kids.

We inspire. We motivate. We encourage. We create.

Registration will open on the SCBWI Wisconsin events page on July 1.

SCBWI Wisconsin Volunteer Positions

Before the pandemic, SCBWI Wisconsin had volunteers who served various areas in Wisconsin. In a nutshell, the Area Reps support members in the NW, NE, SE, and SW sections of Wisconsin.

One such activity could be to arrange free informal meet-ups at area libraries and other venues that do not charge to hold a small meeting. The meetings are networking opportunities or meet-ups for critiquing projects.

The Area Reps work together and with the Wisconsin Regional Advisor.

We are looking for an editor for the NEWS FOR YOU - someone with an interest in sharing members' book news, promoting SCBWI events put on by Wisconsin (ex: Book Buzz and BEYOND +) as well as virtual and in-person events put on by other regions. We'd like NEWS for YOU to include articles contributed by the RA, Publications Promotions, Illustrator Coordinator, Area Reps, and curated and/or written by the NEWS FOR YOU Editor. These might be craft tips, nuances about writing and illustrating, awards, and contests, etc. The NEWS for YOU is (at minimum) once per month emailed newsletter and created in Constant Contact.

Do you have a link to your newsletter or blog you'd like to share?

A Wisconsin SCBWI member suggested that this newsletter "NEWS FOR YOU" put a list of newsletter links together. Hence the Google Form below. If you would like to have your newsletter added to a list that will be shared monthly in this space, please add your info to this Google Form .

Each of these Book Buzz images is a link to the replay recording.

FREE events! Come and support your fellow creatives!

CADY AND THE SEARCH FOR FAMILY

Author: Ann Dallman

Illustrator: Joanna Walitalo

Format: MG

Release date: March 2025

Publisher: Modern History Press

ISBN: 979-8-89656-024-1

Cady’s mother disappeared when Cady was only six. Now, about to turn fourteen, she aches for her mother to be with her. In an attempt to curb her granddaughter’s angry outbursts, Grandma Winnie takes Cady on a road trip throughout Wisconsin and Michigan. “We’ll repeat the trip your mother took when she was your age and maybe you’ll learn more about her,” Grandma tells Cady. Adding to Cady’s stress is the quickly-approaching deadline for her essay entry in Barnesvilles’s anniversary celebration. Through missing her mother and trying to find her, Cady is learning to see herself. “See me, I’m here!” becomes the theme of her essay as Cady explains her native family’s presence in the area to the local residents. The trip teaches her more about her missing mother and to value herself. Accompanying her on her adventures are her best friend, Irish; her “crush,” John Ray Chicaug; and an ever-present blue jay.
