Couple Grateful for Housing Amidst COVID-19

Michelle and her partner Edward had a long journey experiencing homelessness, both apart and together. Michelle has been struggling with homelessness for years; she first arrived at the Campus in 2015. Both had many obstacles to overcome. Michelle lives with multiple sclerosis and mental health issues, which were affecting every aspect of life on the streets and making everything a challenge. Edward also struggles with mental health issues. Their homelessness was further complicated due to the current pandemic. HSC Staff connected them with our partner agencies, such as Homeless ID Project to assist getting the documents needed to go through the housing process; a medical clinic; Community Bridges (CBI) to best learn ways to cope living with life changing conditions and still staying off the streets; and the Arizona Department of Economic Security office on Campus in order to receive food stamps. With this collaboration of services, Michelle and Edward were housed on June 3rd, 2020. We wish them the best for the next phase of their journey!

Homelessness is not a choice. The reasons men and women experience homelessness are as diverse as they are.

To address the challenge, the Human Services Campus and our collaborating partners are seeking Phoenix City Council approval to add more shelter beds.

We are not expanding the Campus. We need permission to use our existing space for those men and women already at and near the Campus, so that more people can sleep inside.
