U of I Hosting Centennial Celebration of Parma

Research and Extension Center on Friday, July 12

WHAT: The University of Idaho invites you to join in celebrating the centennial anniversary of its Parma Research and Extension Center from noon to 2 p.m. Mountain Time Friday, June 12.

The celebration will include lunch, a featured program, tours and educational activities, insect gallery displays, research presentations and posters, stakeholder and industry booths, a historical photo display and children’s activities.

The 200-acre Parma R&E Center provides vital research support in a major seed production area in which food producers raise 118 different crops. The research center’s history traces back to 1922, when U of I entomologists were sent to Parma to help address an outbreak of alfalfa weevil. Industry funded the construction of a permanent entomology field station in Parma in 1925. The center’s 100th anniversary is being observed this year to coincide with the 125th anniversary of the college.

In 2024, the 9,600-square-foot Idaho Center for Plant and Soil Health opened at the center, replacing dilapidated facilities with modern laboratory space for research in nematology, pomology, plant pathology, microbiology and hops quality.

WHERE: U of I Parma Research and Extension Center, 29603 U of I Lane, Parma, Idaho

Understanding Global Fertilizer Markets

In recent years, producers have faced repeated shocks to fertilizer markets because of events such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict and, more recently, the conflict involving Iran. These events have disrupted key markets affecting fertilizer and energy supplies, impacting trade routes and contributing to increased price volatility and supply uncertainty. However, the idea of discussing “fertilizer markets” means more than focusing on a single product with a single supply chain. Nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium (potash) are three major nutrients used for plant growth that each have a different production process, geographic concentration, and trade pattern. Nitrogen fertilizers are closely tied to natural gas and energy markets, while phosphate and potash are mined products concentrated in a relatively small number of countries. As a result, geopolitical disruptions can affect each nutrient differently and create unique risks for global fertilizer markets.
