The San Francisco Peacemaker Awards consists of a ceremony and a workshop. This year we are honored to have Claudia Viera lead us in an implicit bias training.

In her workshop, Ms. Viera will discuss implicit bias and the skills and awareness needed to make positive changes within the mediation community and in our mediation processes. She will define implicit bias and utilize interactive exercises to illustrate this bias.

Ms. Viera’s interactive training invites you to explore the internal assumptions and external behaviors that arise as you engage with others in our multicultural world.

Ms. Viera will present social science research which indicates that, despite our best intentions, we all harbor unconscious biases which impact our behavior toward others, including our clients/participants and co-mediators. She will discuss and demonstrate methods for addressing these biases in the mediation setting.

CLAUDIA M. VIERA

Claudia M. Viera is a highly regarded mediator in the San Francisco Bay Area. Since 2001, she has mediated nearly a thousand tough cases at the state, federal, and appellate level. She focuses on employment cases, including discrimination and harassment claims, contract, business, landlord-tenant, and partnership business dissolutions.

Ms. Viera regularly mediates in Spanish. She is known for her empathy, patience and excellence in resolving high-emotion conflicts.

Ms. Viera initially practiced as an employment attorney with Littler Mendelson, a premier labor and employment law defense firm. She served as the President of The Mediation Society’s Board of Directors from 2016-2017, was the co-chair of the Mediation Committee of the Bar Association of San Francisco for five years, and was the President of the Board of SEEDS Community Resolution Center.

Ms. Viera teaches mediation and conflict resolution classes throughout California and at local law schools and bar associations. She received her law degree from Berkeley Law School and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from U.C. Berkeley. Visit Ms. Viera’s website: www.vieramediation.com.
