Tenant protection

a top priority

for Oakville

Protecting renters and our supply of affordable rental housing in Oakville needs to be an urgent priority as we grow.

Fortunately, we have an opportunity to protect renters from “renovictions” taking away their affordable places to live when we get applications to increase rental housing.

The provincial government announced welcome legislation to beef up tenant protections and prevent renovictions just a few weeks after town council voted unanimously in support of the Ontario housing supply pledge to facilitate approvals of 33,000 new housing units by 2031.

Applications to evict renters from buildings have already begun in Oakville.

I want Oakville to get ahead of this problem.

According to the latest census data, just 22 per cent of Oakville residents rent, in comparison to 35 per cent of residents in the Greater Toronto Area.

Our Official Plan, Livable Oakville, identifies rental housing as a priority.

Our official plan bylaw sets our policy to “discourage the conversion of existing rental properties to condominiums or to other forms of ownership in order to maintain an adequate supply of rental housing.”

Oakville now has an opportunity to adopt bylaws to safeguard renters and the town's supply of affordable rental housing.

The winning project is called Waste Zero and was completed by Dyanne Jiang and Myra Datta.

WasteZero is a completely student-led initiative that concentrates mostly on reducing food waste and increasing awareness.

They engaged students to be Compost Champions to promote composting of any food waste rather than putting in garbage.

Oakville approves funding for 47

heritage property restoration projects

Oakville continues to be a leader in preserving heritage and cultural character of the town. In the tenth year of the Heritage Grant Program, Oakville Town Council approved nearly $138,000 in funding for 47 restoration projects on private heritage properties.

The funds will help heritage properties improve their structural stability through stucco repairs, historic roof replacement, window restorations, and others to preserve the properties for years to come.

“While Oakville continues to grow, heritage preservation remains a priority for Council. The Heritage Grant Program helps maintain the historical and cultural elements of properties and strengthens the visual appeal of Oakville as we stay connected to our cultural roots. By encouraging the restoration of historic materials and diverting waste from landfills, this program also supports the town’s efforts in addressing climate change.” - Mayor Rob Burton

Oakville Fire lifts

town-wide fire ban

The Oakville Fire Department has lifted the town-wide fire ban for all open-air burning effective immediately, June 12, 2023. The decision to end the burn ban is based on the improving air quality and rainfall forecast.

The town had issued a fire ban on June 8 due to dry weather conditions and smoke from wildfires in Ontario and Quebec.

Oakville Fire advises the community to continue practicing fire safety, including when using open fire and fire pits, propane barbecues, cooking indoors and outdoors, candle use and to ensure that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are in working condition.
