After his mother passed away, Ben H. experienced homelessness for about five months in Houston. He decided to move to Seattle to find employment and start a new life. While traveling to Seattle, Ben had stopped in Kansas City when he passed out and woke up on the streets with a severe injury to his hip. He had no memory of what happened. Ben found his way to the hospital where doctors determined his hip was broken at the ball and socket joint. He was transported to Albuquerque, NM where he had a full hip replacement. Ben recovered enough to take a bus from Albuquerque to Phoenix, using the last of his money to get here. Ben still had staples from the surgery when he arrived at the Brian Garcia Welcome Center. HSC Staff helped him obtain a shelter bed at CASS for a couple of nights. HSC Staff also contacted Ben's brother in Seattle, who confirmed that Ben was welcome to come live with him. On May 4th, HSC Staff purchased a bus ticket for Ben, and later confirmed he arrived safely.
Stories like Ben's occur every day at the Human Services Campus; we are extremely grateful for the generous support from so many in our community, to help those most in need.
