Ben Reunited with Brother in Seattle

After his mother passed away, Ben H. experienced homelessness for about five months in Houston. He decided to move to Seattle to find employment and start a new life. While traveling to Seattle, Ben had stopped in Kansas City when he passed out and woke up on the streets with a severe injury to his hip. He had no memory of what happened. Ben found his way to the hospital where doctors determined his hip was broken at the ball and socket joint. He was transported to Albuquerque, NM where he had a full hip replacement. Ben recovered enough to take a bus from Albuquerque to Phoenix, using the last of his money to get here. Ben still had staples from the surgery when he arrived at the Brian Garcia Welcome Center. HSC Staff helped him obtain a shelter bed at CASS for a couple of nights. HSC Staff also contacted Ben's brother in Seattle, who confirmed that Ben was welcome to come live with him. On May 4th, HSC Staff purchased a bus ticket for Ben, and later confirmed he arrived safely.

Stories like Ben's occur every day at the Human Services Campus; we are extremely grateful for the generous support from so many in our community, to help those most in need.

The Next ThirstAid Donation Drop-off

Event is Saturday, July 1st

Summer heat relief is well under way at the HSC! While water is needed year around, even more is needed over the summer. Our organizations will distribute at least 100,000 bottles of water per month from May through September to help clients stay hydrated and healthy. The next bottled water donation drop-off of the season is Saturday, July 1st from 9 am to noon. We make it easy: You pull up at 15th Avenue & Harrison Street, and our staff will remove the donations from your vehicle. We also welcome travel-sized toiletries, summer clothing, shoes, new men's/women's underwear, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm. For more information or to schedule a drop-off on a different day, please email volunteer@hsc-az.org or call us at 602-282-0849.

And a big thank you to Campus partner Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS) who is co-hosting the July 1st event with HSC. Collaboration in action!
