ANNUAL CONFERENCE REPORT

Many Gifts, One Spirit

This weekend I had the privilege of attending the Desert Southwest Annual Conference as a lay member for Red Mountain UMC. I was well prepared for this virtual meeting. Training sessions, reports and many months of well-planned agendas all fell into place in a finely tuned virtual meeting.

A great time this year was the laity session. Gina Pollard spoke for our laity session on the many levels of grief that people have suffered this pandemic year. It was an exceptionally good session, and I took away many new thoughts and ideas of how to help others recognize the grief they are experiencing and what to do about it. She shared the initials EGR which stand for Extra Grace Required. And explained that we may need to watch for those EGR moments in folks who may be going through some tough times.
Many times, at the Annual Conference we listen to the proposed legislation, and we discuss, amend, and then vote. It is good to know that we have these processes in place and that so many people are looking out for the best possible ways of moving forward as a Church united in faith together.

This year Bishop Hoshibata will be retiring and so it will be an end to his
9 years of amazing leadership. I am sad to say goodbye but excited for what lies ahead for him in his retirement.

We have been blessed with many gifts in the churches in our Desert Southwest Conference as well as our Red Mountain United Methodist church family. Many times, I heard the words “I never knew I would be leading worship on zoom, or "I learned more than I ever wanted to know about technology”, “I preached from my kitchen this year”! Yes, much of what took place behind the scenes were new to us all but our Pastors truly stepped up to the plate for us all.

Let the Holy Spirit be with us as we move forward in peace, love, and energy in the months ahead. May we seek justice, and mercy for all.

Blessings, Cyndi Heinecke
