June 16, 2021

Dear Neighbors,

A child crossing a street, a young woman riding her bike, a father walking home from work – these are just a few examples of pedestrians and bicyclists who have been hit by vehicles and in some cases tragically killed on our streets in Fairfax County.

Unfortunately, there is no single cause for these crashes and no single fix. It may have been the lack of a convenient crosswalk, a distracted driver/pedestrian/bicyclist, insufficient street lighting and the list goes on. However, I am committed to working with VDOT and FCDOT on critical infrastructure improvements and the Board of Supervisors has directed county staff to update and combine the Bicycle Master Plan and the Countywide Trails Plan into the ActiveFairfax Transportation Plan.

Captain Thea Pirnat, commander of the Reston District Police Station, is encouraging everyone to stay vigilant on our roads. "During the summer months, you can expect to see an increase in pedestrians, bicycles, and vehicles sharing the road to enjoy our community’s amenities. Please pay attention to your surroundings, follow all the rules of the road, and arrive at your destination happy and safe."

There is still much work to be done to make our streets safer and I urge all of our Hunter Mill residents to make sure you are an attentive and safe driver, pedestrian and bicyclist. Safe streets are up to all of us and lives depend on it.

Countywide Statistics from the Fairfax County Police Department:
To date in 2021:
Pedestrian fatalities – 7
Bicyclists fatalities – 2
Motor Vehicle crash fatalities – 4
Total Fatalities (to date): 13

2020:
Pedestrian fatalities – 14
Bicyclists fatalities – 0
Motor Vehicle crash fatalities 15
Total Fatalities: 29

Above are two PSAs I recently made with the Fairfax County Police Department to address residents' concerns at two intersections – Glade Drive at Charterhouse Circle and New Dominion Parkway near Reston Town Center. Please take a look and share with friends that live in those areas. They are good reminders for all of us who drive, walk or bicycle in our communities.

Respectfully,
Walter

Celebrate Juneteenth and
Liberty Amendments Month
Juneteenth
There are several events planned in Hunter Mill District and the Town of Vienna in celebration of Juneteenth (June 19), which became a county and state holiday in 2020.

What is Juneteenth? On June 19, 1865, the last enslaved Black people living in Texas were told the Civil War had ended; the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed in 1863 and all Black people were now free from the bondage of slavery. This date came to be known as Juneteenth and became a day to celebrate freedom and resiliency. Highlights of the county's 2021 celebration include:

  • The Park Authority is hosting events at several locations including Frying Pan Farm Park, Sully Historic Site and Colvin Run Mill. Learn more.
  • The Fairfax County Public Library has several resources for residents including books, videos and discussions on Juneteenth and Black history. Learn more.
  • Golden Gazette article (Department of Family Services, Older Adults)
  • Fairfax County Government offices are closed Friday, June 18, in recognition of the Juneteenth holiday on June 19. Learn more.

Liberty Amendments Month

Everyone is invited to participate in this monthlong celebration of the passage of the 13th, 14th, 15th and 19th amendments to the U.S. Constitution.
