COMPLICATED TRUTHS: SD PRIDE, ANTISEMITISM & GAZA | |
Important Message from Rev. Trudy:
These days are complicated. Yet our tendency is to make things simple. We yearn for simplicity thinking it would eliminate the chaos and bring things under control. But in our attempt to make things simple, we cause harm. We listen for hard truths and avoid recognizing nuance. We evaluate actions and inactions. We judge people.
Christ calls us to love neighbors, enemies, ourselves, all people. Christ calls us to bring grace with us wherever we are. Christ calls us to enter difficult situations with a word of truth, even if it is complicated truth.
The San Diego Pride Parade contains a complicated truth this year. My Jewish friends who are involved in monitoring and protecting people against increasing antisemitism say this: “Kehlani is scheduled to headline the Pride Festival in San Diego. [But] the dangerous rhetoric that Kehlani has publicly endorsed and amplified…have crossed into outright dehumanization of Jews, with real-world consequences.” I hate that my friends are being threatened, their children are bullied in schools, attacks are killing people.
Another complicated truth is that since the war began, over 54,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed, over half of them women and children, and more than 125,000 Palestinians have been injured. An estimated 1,700 Israelis have died. I hate that war took anyone. I hate that soldiers are being killed. I hate that women are being killed. I hate that children are being killed.
As the Council of Bishops of the United Methodist Church says, “We lament the suffering of Palestinians and Israelis, urging an immediate ceasefire, the protection of all civilians, and a just peace rooted in dignity for all.”
Bishop Julius C. Trimble, the General Secretary of the General Board of Church and Society writes, “It’s important for Christians to advocate for the safety of Jewish people with an understanding of their history, as well as their present pain and suffering.”
The complicated truth is that San Diego Pride is a celebration of Queer people whom FUMCSD honors, affirms and loves AND is highlighting an artist who might be fueling antisemites who will act on that hate.
While searching for a simple answer as to how to deal with this tension, I’d like to offer this one: Love your neighbor, enemy, yourself, and everyone you encounter. Bring God’s grace with you wherever we go. Enter into all complicated situations with a word of truth, compassion and love. And walk in the Pride Parade with a sign and a spirit that beseeches all hate to stop.
~Rev. Trudy
