Mental Health and our Spiritual Life

Thoughts from Our Priest

Shine a light of God’s love on our mental health

We have all heard the phrase, "nobody is perfect." Most of us believe this. However, we may still strive for some unrealistic perfection in life. Please note there is a huge difference between striving for unrealistic perfection and having healthy goals. Sometimes we even harbor shame for our perceived imperfections when we definitely should not. The best solution is to respond with a healthy dose of love and understanding. Acknowledging and accepting our limitations can actually help us celebrate our true beauty and uniqueness.

One important aspect of life that we are now striving to shine light and love on is mental health. Thankfully more time, study and care is being spent on this. However, we still have a long way to go. I once attended a conference designed to break down the stigmas surrounding mental health issues. One important topic discussed was becoming comfortable with how common it is for people to have mental health concerns. It was pointed out that many, many, many people struggle at different points in their life and to varying degrees of difficulty. This would include me. I have struggled over the years with periods of depression to varying decrees. I also exhibit some OCD symptoms from time to time.

So, how does all this fit with our spiritual life and walk with God? Do mind, body and Spirit connect and interrelate? Does God make mistakes? Should we strive to be “healed” and move beyond our limitations? Or are we simply to accept our shortcomings? What does that even look like? Well, what if our focus was different? What if our focus was not on outcomes of being “fixed” or on achieving the personal “perfection” that has been sold to us? What if we instead valued the journey of growth, learning, and ever deepening relationships of love with God and others? What if we learned to move from “why me” to “how now?” We are each invited to shine a light of God's love on our mental health.

Today is God’s Present!

Outreach Opportunities

Outreach Opportunities:

Our core ministries of outreach carry out the work of the church in the world.  Contact person for Outreach is Laurie Schoening at 317-797-6664 or  lschoe1034@aol.com

Family Promise and White River Food Pantry Lists of items needed for donations are on the table in the Narthex.

Bring a Canned Good to Church. On the first Sunday of each month ... we are taking donations of canned goods and peanut butter/jelly for the White River Food Pantry. We would like everyone to bring a canned good to church that day (or feel free to bring in multiple cans). They will then be blessed at the Altar before communion and then delivered later that week. Delivery is usually on Thursday.

Dayspring Center: Helping Homeless families find their way home. Interested in volunteering to serve dinner at Dayspring? Contact Kelly Garrett (317) 508-7790 or Kellygar0729@gmail.com. The next opportunity to serve at Dayspring is July 19. We host every other month. You can also help with food donations for this important Outreach ministry.

POP Tab Collection. Bring your pop tabs from aluminum drink cans to church for our collection. Tabs are donated to help financially with the McDonald House families.

The Church Office hours are Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm (times may vary). Fr. Dan is available all week except on Monday, his Sabbath Day. Friday he works at home writing, but is available for any pastoral concerns.
