June 19, 2020
Dear Church of St. Mary
It is very hard to believe that my time here will be coming to an end in 11 days, after only two years. As I shared a few months back (I think – we all know time seems to have lost most meaning these days), I have been asked and agreed to go on for further studies in Canon Law this upcoming Fall. This means my time at St. Mary’s will officially come to an end on June 30
th
. I do plan to take some time off in July as Fr. Nacius returns from his sabbatical. Shortly after announcing that I would be leaving for Ottawa for my studies I was informed that my new university would be e-learning for the Fall semester, if not longer. That threw my plans up in the air, as has much of the reality since COVID 19 became all too real for us.
While I will not be traveling to Canada this summer, I have been encouraged to still move to an academic setting to help foster my primary responsibility as a student for the next three years. Therefore I will be moving onto campus at Mundelein seminary as I begin this new venture. I will still be around a bit in the Fall as I come back to celebrate a handful of weddings as well as helping at weekend Masses as needed by the parish. It feels very anticlimactic to be ending my time as Associate Pastor and Administrator in such a way. I have been sharing with some individuals it has really felt like I will be a ship sailing in the night. It has been hard realizing that most of my people I have not been able to see for the last three months, and may not see them before my time concludes here. As we are still not allowed to gather, outside of Church celebrations, in groups of more than 10 individuals, we are not able to hold any sort of farewell celebration at this time. As soon as that is possible, I will work with Fr. Nacius on what is both possible and prudent and we will share that with everybody.
As I stepped into the role of Administrator on January 1
st
, I, along with the rest of the world, had no idea what 2020 would bring. It has hemmed and hawed from humbling to challenging to bizarre to uncertain to grace-filled, and everything in-between. These last several months really have been a blur. I couldn’t tell you much of what happened during the entire month of April aside from me being sick. I am fairly certain Easter was in there as well at some point… The reality we found ourselves in was so surreal and mind-boggling that it is impossible to fully grasp. And while we may be on the upswing of things, our world continues to surprise us, or at least myself, on a fairly daily basis.
My prayer and reflection lately has focused on the surreal aspect of these last three months. It led me to a deeper reflection on life with God. When we participate in the life of grace, when we are drawn into the unfathomable mysteries of the very life of God, it may be likened to these last several months. Time is unimportant. We are constantly amazed and awed at new elements (always in a good way with God). Whenever we think we have a grasp on it all, something new and completely unexpected is revealed. To reflect on this time of pandemic and how we have not only gone through it, but truly been prepared for it because of our faith, can lead us to a deep and abiding sense of the reality of God.
It may not always feel like it, but I truly do believe that we are able to find God in all of this. Many of the times it has been incredibly challenging, yes absolutely. But think of the flood waters receding for Noah; the Promised Land after 40 years of wandering in the desert with Moses; the return from Exile; the coming of the Christ; and the absolute joy of Easter Sunday following Good Friday. Throughout so many elements of our faith and our history, we can see where God was, even if He was difficult to see while the struggles were taking place. God will get us through this. This too shall pass. We will see the life of God and the joy of sharing in his grace once more!
May God bless you all!

From the Archdiocese of Chicago

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, marks June 19, 1865, the day that Union General Gordon Granger read in Galveston, Texas, the Emancipation Proclamation – signed two years earlier by President Abraham Lincoln – thus giving late notice to the enslaved people of Texas that they were free.
In recognition of this important day in the life of the nation, this year the Archdiocese of Chicago will commemorate Juneteenth by taking this day off of work. There has never been a more critical time to honor this important date as our nation takes up crucial conversations on racism. In commemoration,
all Parish and School Offices will be CLOSED on Friday, June 19, 2020
.
As the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops stated in its recent statement on the death of George Floyd, “We cannot turn a blind eye to these atrocities and yet still try to profess to respect every human life. We serve a God of love, mercy, and justice.” Citing a recent document on racism, the USCCB continued, “As bishops, we unequivocally state that racism is a life issue.” Our country’s founding documents declare that all men are created equal. This fundamental principle must apply to every aspect of our society. Let us start doing so by taking this year’s commemoration of Juneteenth to examine our hearts. The archdiocese invites its staff and ministers to take this day to reflect on what each of us can do to help end the scourge of racism.

GENERAL GUIDELINES
Below are a few guidelines for being in the Church. There are numerous signs around the exterior and interior of the Church to help facilitate these new patterns.
Due to the limited capacity, number of parishioners and our reduced Mass schedule,
we ask that you sign up for a weekend Mass every other week and one weekday Mass
to allow others to be able to pray in the Church and celebrate Mass in person. If the day before, there are still open slots, you may sign up.
- Church Entrance: The south door, near the elevator, is the only entrance into the Church. Please form a line along the exterior south wall of the Church and a volunteer greeter will let you in.
- Arrive On Time: South Entrance doors will open 15 minutes prior to the start of Mass and it is strongly encouraged you arrive by the time the doors open as time is needed to Greet visitors and allow Ushers to seat you.
- Entrance Doors Close: South Entrance doors will close at the start of Mass to allow volunteers to attend Mass. Thank you for allowing yourself time to arrive.
- Volunteers: Parish volunteers will be on site to help direct and guide all of us as we begin to open and re-enter the Church.
- Masks/Face Covering: Mask or face coverings are required to be worn by all individuals at all times while in the Church building.
- Hand Sanitizer: Sanitize your hands as you enter the Church building.
- Social Distance: Maintain proper social distancing of 6 feet apart, unless you are with somebody who lives in the same household as you. There are floor markings to help facilitate this.
- 100 Persons Maximum: A maximum of 100 individuals (excluding the priest and other ministers) are allowed in the Church at one time. In inclement weather, personal vehicles would be a necessary shelter while waiting.
- Church Exit: The north doors onto the main plaza will be the only exit from the Church (unless you require use of the elevator).
- Church East Entrance - Emergency Exit Only: Please do not use the East doors onto the stairways for either entering or exiting.
- Surface Sanitizing: All surfaces touched by persons are sanitized prior to the next opening of the Church.
- Restrooms Unavailable: For the safety of all, the restrooms will not be available, unless it's an emergency.
- Registration Required: Registration is required through SignUp Genius for Public Mass, Adoration, Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. 85 slots will be available online and 15 slots will be available by calling the office for those who do not have access to technology.
- SignUp Availability: SignUps for the next week's schedule will be available through SignUp Genius after 9:00am on Friday's. Registration is required for Public Mass & Prayer, Adoration, Weddings, Funerals and Baptisms. If you need assistance, please contact the Parish Center Office during normal business hours at receptionist@churchofstmary.org or call 847-234-0205. Leave a message and they will call you back.
VOLUNTEERS
Volunteer Tasks:
- Greeters will assist in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the church, participate in the liturgy/sacrament, and exit the church.
- Team members will combine some of the functions of an usher, such as directing participants to appropriate seating/waiting areas, but will include additional responsibilities, including, but not limited to, making sure attendees use hand sanitizer upon entering, are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill.
- Given the circumstances, greeters will need to be tactful and firm paying careful attention to all people on-site. To support parish greeter teams, rudimentary training tips on handling difficult situations will be provided.
- Volunteers will ensure that: all supplies needed for each sacramental celebration/gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and propped physically open prior to attendees' arrival/departure, and windows are opened.
- Volunteers will help maintain and sanitize essential and trafficked areas of the church after the church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if necessary, in addition to approved cleaning/disinfecting supplies.
May God grant you peace and comfort in this time.

Father's Day Tributes for your Favorite Priest
#thanksFather
|
|
Priests are fathers too! For Father's Day this year, we want to thank our priests for their spiritual fatherhood in our lives. This is especially true in these last few months, as priests have adapted to continue ministering to God's people. They found
creative ways
to reach out to their parishioners to provide prayerful support and care.
As the spiritual fathers of our faith communities, parish priests have accompanied us throughout the year, just as they have been present throughout some of the most important moments of our lives. In everything, they have reminded us to draw closer to our heavenly Father and His Beloved Son, as well as pray through the intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary.
Who are the priests in your life who have been spiritual fathers for you? For Father's Day, Mundelein Seminary invites you to post an online tribute to them through our #thanksFather project.
Here's how you can participate:
- Post a photo on social media watching a livestream Mass or any photo you have with your priest and tell us why you are grateful for that priest in your life. Use #thanksFather, and tag us @mundeleinsem so we can reshare it.
- Send Mundelein Seminary an email at socialmedia@usml.edu with a photo and/or message for a priest you would like to thank and we will share it on our website and social media platforms.
- Make a gift here.

June 21, 2020: Gospel Reflection for the Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
|
|
Our Sunday gospels are back in Ordinary Time and we hear from the gospel of Matthew once again.
In both our first reading and the gospel we hear of profits and disciples who are to speak and live the Word of God. They know all too well that in doing so they will be beaten, ridiculed and may lose their lives. That’s definitely enough to give anyone pause! However Jesus gives the disciples encouragement reminding them that no matter what happens, they will never be alone. The Holy Spirit will always be with them, working through them. Even though others will try to suppress them and the message Jesus brought, that is exactly when to shout the message all the louder! The love of God and the offer of salvation cannot be silenced!
We are to do the will of God. That sounds like such a simple statement, yet there is so much more to it. Our country if not the whole world is in unrest and rightfully so, over racial inequality. Jesus taught again & again that we are all equal, no matter what. Rich, poor, outside the community or inside; God loves every being equally. In turn we are to do the same and to work to ensure that all are brought into the community and feel the love of God and community. That may ruffle some feathers, Jesus certainly did when he preached and lived this out.
So what can each of us do? We can look at how we interact with those around us day in and day out. It’s easy to be fair to our friends, but what about those people we don’t know? When we are grocery shopping or at the train station, do we avoid certain people because we have made a judgment based on a quick glance of how they look? Maybe we can make a game of it in our minds; we know that God dwells within every being. Knowing that, look at those you don’t know (yet), and try to find God in them! Maybe it is in their smile or how they let others in front of them or offer their seat on public transportation. Maybe it is how they suffer with dignity or dance as if no one is watching! In seeking God in everyone, we become that much closer to seeing all as the beloved of God. It may not always be easy, it may come with hardship, but if we truly follow the master, then we must live as the master has lived.

Sharing Parish Collection - June 21
Sunday, June 21, is our opportunity to help our Sharing Parish, Most Blessed Trinity in Waukegan. Now, more than ever, the needs of the people served by Most Blessed Trinity are great. They have been disproportionately affected by Covid-19. Because of this, the numbers of families needing help from the Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen have increased and the parish has also begun delivering food and meals to the homebound who have been affected by the virus. Requests for assistance in paying medical bills have also increased.
Donations to Most Blessed Trinity can be made online via
GiveCentral
(Church of St. Mary GiveCentral) or return your Sharing Parish offering envelope by mail to the Church of St. Mary, 201 E. Illinois, Lake Forest, IL 60045. If sending a check without the offering envelope, please indicate Most Blessed Trinity in the memo field.
