McElroy Ordained to Priesthood

The Rev. Betsy McElroy, bookended by bishops Betsey Monnot and Megan Traquair.

Last Sunday afternoon, Betsy McElroy was ordained to the Holy Order of Priests at St. Martin's in Davis, by none other than the Rt. Rev. Betsey Monnot, Bishop of the Diocese of Iowa. It was great to welcome Bishop Betsey back to her home diocese for the first time since her consecration in 2022.

Congratulations, Betsy, and Welcome Home, Betsey!

Camp Living Waters set for July 23 – 28

Help your children, aged 9 to 15, avoid the mid-summer doldrums, send them to Camp Living Waters, an Episcopal summer camp set for July 23 to 28 at Cookson Ranch in Redwood Valley.

Camp Living Waters is a week-long Episcopal summer camp. It is a non-profit camp based at St. Alban's parish in Arcata and draws its staff members from the faith communities of the north coast who lead, supervise and encourage campers and counselors. Its week is based around a daily schedule including crafts, outdoor activities, swimming, Bible discussion, worship, and nightly campfire, with additional special activities throughout the week such as stargazing and archery. Campers aged 9 to 15 make new friendships and explore their faith and ask questions; counselors get to do that and learn leadership skills in a supportive atmosphere. The week is spent living and building a Christian community based on the values of love, service and fun.

Tuition for the camp is $200 and includes five nights lodging, meals, and activities. For information or to register for the Camp go to www.camplivingwatershumboldt.org or call St. Alban's Episcopal Church at (707) 822-4102. Contact St. Alban's if you are interested in a campership (scholarship).

Missioner for Disaster Resilience

Disaster Resilience Needs YOUR Support

The Mission for Disaster Resilience in our diocese is the only program of its kind in the Episcopal Church. Since beginning in 2021, this ministry has been a tremendous success and redefined how we, as the body of Christ, respond to disaster and care for our neighbors.

Since January of this year, we have:

  • Supported Emotional and Mental Health needs of Camp Fire survivors
  • Provided ongoing support of Caldor Fire rebuilding efforts
  • Provided continuing Material & Emotional support of Humboldt County earthquake recovery
  • Partnered with American Red Cross to provide tents for unhoused individuals in Sacramento Area during winter storms
  • Established Food & Nutrition programming for Mill Fire survivors
  • Provided Targeted Violence prevention training for diocesan LGBTQIA+ leaders

While we have funds to support existing ministries, we have limited resources to respond to future disasters. Just last weekend, there were eight fires that prompted evacuation warnings and orders in our diocese. Despite record-setting rainfall and snows, we know that fire season is just beginning, and lasts for months.

The need for Disaster Resilience is real. Thanks to your generosity, we have been able to respond to the needs of many, both during, and after disasters. Please consider giving today, so we may be prepared for tomorrow.

You can donate to the Bishops Disaster Fund here.

Peace,

Mark

Diocese Board of Trustees

This is a short synopsis of what happened at the most recent Board of Trustees meeting. While this is not a full report of our meeting, it does share some of the highlights of our work.

During the June Board of Trustees Meeting:

The Board approved changes to the interest rate policy for loans made by the Investment Fund Committee. In addition, the Board approved Kevin Donahue as Vice-Chancellor for the diocese and we appointed Rev. Karen Freeman as the Interim Secretary of the Board while the Rev. Dr. Pamela Dolan is away on sabbatical this summer.

The Rev. Canon Cookie Clark gave the Board a detailed report about Episcopal Community Services (ECS) recent activities. We heard about the congregations around the diocese who received grants from ECS and the breadth of projects they are working on. In addition, we heard about ECSs plans for the upcoming year.

The Rev. Dr. Pamela Dolan presented a mid-year budget request on behalf of the Commission on the Environment. This $25,000 request approved the contract with Energy for Purpose to begin energy-efficiency assessments for congregations with green teams. It is hoped that the congregations who participate in the energy audits will increase energy efficiency and transition to renewable energy sources. The Board approved the budget request.

Finally, the Board reviewed the budget requests for the 2024 budget from most of the committees and groups that are funded by the Diocesan Budget. Treasurer John Nycamp offered an overview of the budget process and presented a preliminary budget.

Racial Justice Audit Update

Thank you to everyone who responded to the Racial Justice Audit survey distributed at Diocesan level for responses. The Mission Institute (MI) received 62 responses (out of 105 surveys) which is a 59% return rate. Ten people volunteered to be interviewed by MI which is the next step in the audit process. They have been contacted to be scheduled for interviews. MI will analyze the interviews and survey responses and will provide a report which will be shared at the Diocesan Convention in November.

MI will invite parishes to participate in the survey process next year in 2024, provided funding is approved by the Board of Trustees. This two-year process is in accordance with R3-2021, the Racial Justice Audit Resolution which passed with a majority vote at the 2021 Diocesan Convention.

St. John’s, Roseville, Will Host Sacred Ground Dialogue Circles Beginning August 2023

Sacred Ground is a film- and readings-based small group dialogue series on race and racism in America, grounded in faith and is part of Becoming Beloved Community, the Episcopal Church’s long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation, and justice in our personal lives, our ministries, and our society. To date, over 70 individuals have attended the four previous sets of circles offered at St. John’s.

This is an 11-session program, with small group discussion and reflection. Sessions will be held bi-weekly on Wednesday evenings from 7-9 pm beginning August 2, 2023, and will be offered via Zoom. There is no cost for attending the program, although participants are asked to purchase two books to help guide them in our discussions.

We encourage Sacred Ground graduates to register if they are interested in a “deeper dive” into the Sacred Ground curriculum materials. If there is enough interest and graduates, we will form a separate “deeper dive” dialogue circle.

For more information, or to indicate your interest in attending, please contact Diane Williamson at dianewilliamson864@gmail.com or (916) 300-6384.
