Upper Chattahoochee Chapter #436 - Trout Unlimited
www.ucctu.org
June 2013
Greetings!

I've spoken before about strengthening our Chapter by welcoming women fly fishers. This month I want to highlight yet another group that adds dimenion to UCCTU though diversity; youth. The recent release of Trout In The Classroom raised fingerlings into the Chattahoochee River is one major TU outreach to kids. This month, the Georgia TU Council has just held Trout Camp 2013. Please see the article below.

Next month we get one of our few opportunities each year to be really hands-on with conservation. If you've never participated in a stream restoration project, please see the link below.  There are rocks and logs to fit volunteers of all sizes and ages.  I've found theses projects to be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding of all of my TU experiences.

Sincerely,
Brad

June Meeting Speaker -  Leon Brotherton,

"Brook Trout Habitat"
  Leon Brotherton
The State of Georga DNR is a valuable partner with us in preserving and improving our native trout fisheries.  Learn about the State's efforts and how those of Georgia TU Chapters work together toward this shared goal.

2013 Georgia TU Trout Camp a Huge Success
  Myles and Ryan Hartley
Each year Georgia TU Chapters have the opportunity to send two campers to Trout Camp, held at Rabun Gap Nacoochee School in Clayton, GA.   The camp, for both boys and girls ages 12 - 15, ran from June 9 - 14.

In addition to fishing instruction the kids are introduced to aquatic invertebrates, fly tying, stream dynamics, and stream restoration.

This year, UCCTU had three interested boys and was able to send all three by obtaining an unused space from the Oconee River TU Chapter.  Bryson Hilburn, and brothers Myles and Ryan Hartley were our representatives.

By every account, the kids had a great time.  And the Hartley brothers each garnered accolades.  Myles won the Julie Stalnaker Award for outstanding camper  and Ryan won the fly tying contest.

Nurturing young fly fishers today creates tomorrow's conservationists.
UCCTU Sponsors and Exhibits at 2013 CRK River Race and Festival
  River Race 2013
UCCTU was a $1000 sponsor of the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper's event this year.  Over 419 paddlers participated.  1200 Festival attendees at Riverside Park were treated to food, live music and displays by outdoor related vendors and groups.  Tom Hayes, UCCTU Membership Chairman, organized and set up our Chapter's booth.  Chapter volunteers handed out TU information, fielded questions from fly fishers and aspirants, and applied trout tattoos to many kids.  UCCTU VP and Education Chairman Jim Harvey gave fly casting lessons between peformances by the frisbee dogs.

Martin Branch Work Day - July 13

This brook trout stream restoration project is a great way to spend a Saturday.  Ankle to knee deep in a north Georgia mountain stream is a great way to beat the summer heat. UCCTU joins fellow TU Chapter members moving rocks and logs of all sizes.  Under the direction of the US Forest Service.  Be amazed at what a dedicated group of volunteer men and women can do to improve b rook trout habitat.  And a good way to learn where to fish next year.

News Bites
Congratulations to Valerie and Mark Macdonald on the birth of their son, Harris.

The combined proceeds of Georgia TU Council sponsored "Fly Tie-Athlon" were donated to Smithgall Woods for the expansion of their youth education programs.

This summer Jim Harvey continues his obsession with Chattahoochee river stripers.

On his annual canoe trip, Brad Cruickshank and friends paddled and fished Woodland Caribou Provincial Park, Ontario.  Brad caught smallmouth, northerns and walleyes; mostly while succumbed to the "dark side".  He did, however, break out his 9 wt. to catch two northerns on a squirrel pattern fly.

July Meeting Speaker - Don Kirk

Don Kirk has been a full-time writer/editor for parts of five decades.  Currently he is affiliated with Southern Trout Magazine.  A native of east Tennessee, Don is the best known fly fishing expert in the country on southern waters; especially the trout streams of the Great Smoky Mountains.  His fishing guide books of the Smokies have sold over 100,000.  Bring yours and get it autographed!
