Embrace the shift from formal to informal learning
How much of your learning is controlled by staff? All of it? Some of it? None of it? I doubt the latter. You may say all of it if you think that learning only takes place at staff-run networking events, conferences, meetings, webinars and certification programs.
But what if you consider the learning which takes place informally through members sharing knowledge in an online forum, accessing cataloged resources on the association's website, mentoring each other, posting on social media or perhaps using an app while "on-the-job"? Do you consider these part of your educational program? If not, you should. Not only because they are educational experiences but because they will be the type of learning experiences which dominate educational practices in associations in the 21st century.
By designing your educational programs around the following three principles, your association will be ready to embrace the educational shift from formal to informal learning.
