A Word from the Board - Board Director - Sacha Urban
|
"Girls just Wanna Have Fun" Cindy Lauper sang in 1983. Well, not much has changed in that regard but quite a bit has changed for women in the past 33 years. Just a couple years earlier, in 1981 the Women's Business Council (WBC) was added to the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce in order to
act as a network for a more effective exchange of ideas among women and men in the community.Today, the WBC does this by planning and executing 10 luncheons per year including the beloved annual Holiday party at the beginning of December. Creating a warm, welcoming, and professional environment allows people not only to network and promote their businesses, but to form lasting relationships and friendships as well - which lies at the basis of any successful enterprise.
Philanthropy is essential to WBC. At every luncheon, the proceeds of the raffle items go to a local charity for 3 months. Most recently
, Fox Valley Food For Health was the recipient and currently,
Embrace a Family receives the coming funds. The story of this charity is a full circle example of how a strong networking group strengthens the community. Tori Haines, the founder of Embrace a Family (along with Jodi Mann), has been a supporter of TriCity Family Services, especially the Single Moms group where she helped them as a volunteer with their tax returns and taught them how to build and work within a budget since 2004.
Please join us for the Networking on the Patio on Thursday, July 21st from 4:30 to 6:30 pm at Charleston on the River at 1 W Illinois Street in St. Charles. Call the Chamber at (630) 584-8384 for registration. This is a multi-chamber event with Geneva and the Batavia Chamber hosted by the WBC. Young Professionals Council Educational Luncheon- Continuing the "Building Blocks to Business Success" Series, the YPC had a speaker discuss the topic of "Bridging the Generational Gap in Business". This luncheon brought new light to a lot of new ideas and old ideas and how it is important to learn as much as we can from older generations and also learn new ideas to make things more efficient. "Not Wrong, Just Different" - consider this when different generations use different methods, the important thing is getting the correct/right finished product.

Industrial Tour
Clarke
675 Sidwell Ct
St. Charles, IL 60174
Over 60 attendees enjoyed a tour of Clarke, who develops mosquito control products and aquatic services. Our members learned how management listened to their employees to create a corporate campus of innovation and establish a zero waste program. During the tour, we viewed the Formulations Laboratory where we saw certain formulations that last in water from 7 days up to 180 days, and safe enough for use in potable water. The formulations were in the form of liquid as well as solids from very small to 3" long pellets, in which some contained a quick and long lasting release of dosage for quick and long lasting control. An interesting area was in the Incubation refrigerators, where we saw the life stages from larvae to adult mosquito - later used in testing their products. Clarke is only controlling mosquito populations in which diseases, etc, are wished to be decreased. We would like to thank Clarke for allowing our members this great opportunity to view their impressive site.

The WBC also raffled off a variety of prizes donated by generous businesses in the St. Charles area. All raffle proceeds will be donated to the WBC's quarterly charity: Embrace A Family.

The City Expands Business Incentives Program
In January 2015, the City launched the Downtown Business Economic Incentive Program which offers 50/50 matching awards for structural, plumbing, electrical and life safety upgrades (fire sprinklers, alarms, etc.) made on the first floor of commercial buildings. Due to the success of the program, the City Council has recommended the program be expanded to commercial properties outside the downtown but within the city. In general this would include properties in the downtown area and all commercial properties with frontage along Rt. 64, Rt. 38 and Randall Road. The program is open to both new businesses locating to St. Charles and existing businesses interested in expansion or relocation. It's just one more way the City is acting to help preserve building stock, fill vacancies and attract new businesses. The available award can be as much as $25,000 and is subject to City Council approval.
