Summer driving is finally here! It's the perfect time to enjoy a nice drive and forget the horrors of winter. Another sign of summer is the build out dates of 2017 models. Many manufacturers have now closed off factory ordering for 2017 as they gear up for production of 2018 models.

It's also easy to drive up the numbers on the odometer in the summertime, so you need to be able to rely on your vehicle and trust that it will get you to where you want to be safely. This month we're featuring the 10 longest-lasting vehicles on the road today. These are models that are the most likely to have a greater number of vehicles travel more than 321,000 kms in their lifespan, which means they are more reliable and long-lasting.

For this month's newsletter, we're also featuring a preview of Chevrolet's special-edition Corvette for its 65th anniversary and  tips for how to get your hands on the next classic car.

We hope you enjoy the information below and will

Corvette Turns 65
The special-edition Corvette is called the Carbon 65, and the "65" in the name signifies next year's 65th anniversary of the start of production of the original Corvette. The first Corvettes rolled off the line at a plant in Flint, Michigan on June 30, 1953.

The Carbon 65 is a new special-edition model available for the 2018 model year in either Grand Sport or Z06 versions.

Chevrolet will build just 650 cars for worldwide sale. You can identify the anniversary-edition models by their "Carbon 65" graphics as well as their visible carbon fibre accents, such as on the rear spoiler, rear ducts, side skirts, and wheel centre caps. In the cabin, you'll find a carbon fibre steering wheel, sport seats, and black suede with contrasting blue stitching for much of the trim.

No mechanical changes are made, so the Grand Sport version continues with a 6.2-litre V-8 good for 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. The Z06 version with a supercharged 6.2-litre V-8 good for 650 hp and 650 lb.-ft. of torque.

The new Corvette will be available this summer.
Looking for that Atypical Truck

One of the fastest growing segments is the compact pick up truck. For those looking at this segment, there are some great options to choose from.

The Honda Ridgeline is a good place to start. It has a uni-body construction, based on the Pilot SUV, which means it feels like a car to drive. It's also a mid-size truck, which will make it easier to drive around town.

Uni-bodies, like the Ridgeline, usually are a flatter ride and feel more responsive to the throttle. Body-on-body trucks, on the other hand, tend to tip and lean around corners, surge up to speed, and they're stronger for towing.

The Toyota Tacoma, then, is a logical competitor. It looks more truck-like than the Ridgeline and comes in nine different models, meaning there's plenty of variety. The most basic 4x4 Tacoma can get out the door for less than $40,000. It also has one of the strongest residual values of any vehicle in the marketplace.

If 4x4 is the main priority, the Nissan Frontier is a cheaper option, starting at $29,448, but, like the Tacoma, it hasn't been revised in years.

These days, the mid-sized truck with the best technology is the Chevy Colorado -- it's a bit pricier for a 4x4 than the Frontier, but it's up-to-date with new tech.

Regardless of your needs, there are a number of mid-sized options if you're set on a getting a new truck.
2018 Honda Odyssey

The new Odyssey, with its quiet but powerful engine, stiffer body and suspension, and the all-new 10-speed automatic gearbox, is the perfect minivan. In fact, it's possibly the most luxurious vehicle Honda sells, with more space than the Pilot SUV and an engine that now makes 280 horsepower. It seats eight people as standard and there's plenty of room in the third row.

That third row is a big deal for the 2018 Odyssey. It's easier than before to get in and out because the floor is now 35 millimetres lower for stepping into, and the second-row seats now slide away sideways from each door to make better room for access behind. Car seats can be left in place in the second row, while older passengers climb in and out of the third row with no complaints.

There are five different trim levels, starting at $34,890 for the LX and rising up to $50,290 for the fully-kitted Touring edition. The fabled vacuum cleaner that was previously only available with the most expensive trim is no fitted to all but the most basic edition.

The CabinWatch feature is a rear-seat monitor, which uses a fish-eye camera above the second row to show an image of the entire rear cabin on the central display screen, for keeping an eye on your kids. It's an infrared camera, too, so it works in the dark. There's also a CabinTalk feature that allows the driver to speak through the rear speakers and the van's headphones. And there's a "How much farther" app that shows a cool animation to the rear passengers on the drop-down movie screen of how close you are to the destination that your kids will be sure to love.

Get Tomorrow's Classic Without That Crazy Price

If you want to buy a reasonably-priced car that stands a chance of becoming a classic, you start by acquiring something that is hot and sporty and not produced in the hundreds of thousands. Black Book, the used-car guide, examined several classics that were once accessible to the average buyer and now command prices hundreds of times high than when they were produced.

Here is an example: a 1971 Plymouth Barracuda convertible had a sticker price of $4,296 (USD) when it came out. That same car's Black Book Value today is $2.5 million (USD), a 58,000 per cent increase. Nice investment.

Other classics, including the 1967 Shelby Cobra, 1965 Ford Mustang GT, and 1959 Cadillac Eldorado, have gone from affordable back in the day to collectors' items that fetch more than 20 times their original sticker prices.

A variety of factors come into play. Production volume is important, along with the car's position in pop culture. The buyers in 20 years are going to the youngsters of today that couldn't that couldn't afford them in their youth.

So, which of today's reasonably-priced cars are poised to become the more expensive classics of tomorrow? Look at the low-volume models, such as the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350, Dodge Charger Hellcat, and Nissan 370Z Nismo.

Mazda's CX-5 compact crossover, which has been a success story since its debut in 2012, now accounts for about a quarter of all Mazda sales worldwide. In fact, Mazda has sold more than 14 million models around the world since its launch.

Now for 2017, a new second-generation CX-5 has arrived -- with 698 changes, according to Mazda.

Mazda says their goal with the new CX-5 was to create a new level of driving pleasure and passenger comfort, with a focus on making the cabin quieter and the rear seat more inviting.

Among the new standard features for the 2017 CX-5 are LED headlights and daytime running lights, rearview camera, 17-inch alloy wheels, noise-isolating windshield, and a seven-inch touchscreen with Mazda Connect.

The CX-5 offers three trim levels: GX, GS, and GT, starting at $24,900. The entry-level GX comes with front-wheel drive, a six-speed manual transmission, and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine making 150 horsepower. all other trims get a 187-hp 2.5-litre inline four, matched with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The exterior also has a bolder look, particularly up front where the Mazda family face has been refreshed.

In keeping with its goal of taking the brand to a more premium level, Mazda has made available standard or optional features, such as a power-rear liftgate, front wiper de-icer, heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, 10 Bose speakers on the premium audio system, a traffic sign recognition system, head up display, and a seat memory function.

Walk. Don't Walk: Intersection Decorum
Toronto Sun
Think you can start crossing the street once the timer has started? Talk to the hand.

Once the flashing hand that comes with every countdown, appears, it is illegal for a pedestrian to cross the road. Anyone already on the roadway can finish crossing the street, but no one else is allowed to start.

Section 144 (27) of Ontario's Highway Traffic Act says, "no pedestrian approaching pedestrian control signals and facing a solid or flashing 'don't walk' indication shall enter the roadway."

Disobey this law, and it's a $45 fine, including the victim surcharge.

So if you can't start crossing when the countdown has started, what exactly is it for? According to the Ministry of Transportation, the countdown is meant to indicate how much time is left for pedestrians to finish crossing. It also allows drivers who are turning left to clear the intersection.
Top 10 Longest-Lasting Vehicles in America
According to a recent study, SUVs are the way to go if you want a long-lasting vehicle. Automotive research firm iSeeCars.com has analyzed over 13 million cars on the road to determine how many have racked up more than 200,000 miles (over 321,000 kilometres) on the odometer. The average model has 1.3 per cent of its cars on the road with more than 200,000 miles, while every vehicle in the top 10 has at least 2.3 per cent with that superior lifespan.

You'll recognize some automakers on the list have built their reputation on reliability over the years, such as Toyota. But SUVs and pickup trucks dominate the top 10, so it might be a good idea to start there if you plan on keeping your vehicle for a long time.

10. Honda Accord/Odyssey: Both models tie for 10th place, with 2.3 per cent of them on roads hitting over 321,000 kms.
5. GMC Yukon XL: The larger Yukon sees 4.2 per cent of its models reaching the 321,000-kms mark, proving GM's SUVs are reliable.

9. Toyota Tacoma: The Tacoma sees 2.5 per cent of its trucks travelling more than 321,000 kms.
4. Toyota 4Runner: The 4Runner is popular for a reason: 4.7 per cent of its models hit 321,000 kms.

8. Toyota Avalon: The Avalon is the longest-lasting car on the list, with 2.6 per cent of them on the road reaching more than 321,000 kms.
3. Chevrolet Suburban: The most impressive of GM's SUVs, the Suburban sees 4.8 per cent of its models on the road hitting 321,000 kms.

7. GMC Yukon: Three per cent of Yukons travel more than 321,000 kms, making it a reliable workhorse for families or chauffeur vehicles.

2. Toyota Sequoia: The longest-lasting Japanese car on the list, the Sequoia has 5.6 per cent of its models reaching more than 321,000 kms.

6. Chevrolet Tahoe: Chevy's Tahoe lurks close by the Yukon, with 3.5 per cent of models having more than 321,000 kms.
1. Ford Expedition: The longest-lasting car, with 5.7 per cent travelling 321,000 kms is also one of today's most popular SUVs.
