Affiliate President Letty Baldaro's Message
Dear Friends:

During May is Mental Health Month we participated in events that celebrated recovery and increased community awareness about Mental Health.
Thank you to our members that participated, volunteered, sent emails, posted on Facebook in recognition of May is Mental Health Month.  Remember July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.

We started the month with our Arts and Crafts Social, on May 13th that Eliana Lopez coordinated. There were about 25 that attended and were able to work on crafts, get advice from experts and enjoy a relaxing social time. Enough donated personal hygiene items to fill a laundry basket were collected and donated to the Acencia shelter in Glendale. Thank you all for participating and helping with the success of this event.

On May 18th NAMI Glendale was represented at a luncheon sponsored by the Soroptimist International of Glendale.  Amanda Lipp member of NAMI California Board spoke on "Finding Strength and Opportunity Amidst Adversity".  If you missed hearing Amanda Lipp, you will have another opportunity at the Pathways Conference coming up Sun. June 25th.

On May 20th we were invited to participate in a community event, "Finding Help, Finding Hope, Recovery & Well Being". This event is brought to the community with the great support of LAUSD Nightingale Middle School, El Centro del Pueblo, Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, and Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health Northeast Mental Health Center and Northeast Wellness Center.  Fran Hovorka, Eliana Lopez and Christine Miranda volunteered for our NAMI Glendale table and offered resources and healthy snacks.  This was a successful event attend by many providers, family members, students.

NAMIWalks Los Angeles County, will be Sat. October 7th. This is the only fundraiser that NAMI Glendale participates in. This is a countywide walk that is attended by over 5,000 people at Grand Park, Los Angeles.   There will be NAMIWalks information meeting on Sunday July 30th. More information coming up for a fun afternoon event.  You can register your team or sign up to walk at: www.namiwalks.org/losangelescounty

Just a reminder these events and activities all happen because our members take an active part in volunteering.  We are a "volunteer run affiliate", we have no staff, and it takes the entire team to do outreach,  facilitate support groups, teach classes and so much more! Volunteers are the life blood of the affiliate and we couldn't do all we do without them. We are always looking for more volunteers. There are many ways to help, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator,  Kim Zolna at kznami26@gmail.com and she can help you find where you can do something you love and share your talents with the affiliate.

There is a full summer of upcoming events and hope you can participate in some or all.
Have a wonderful summer!

Letty

NAMI Glendale Mission Statement
NAMI-Glendale is the local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness serving Greater Glendale including the adjacent communities of Burbank, Eagle Rock, Echo Park, Garvanza, Glendale, Highland Park, Hollywood, Montrose, North Hollywood, Shadow Hills, Silver Lake, Sunland, and Tujunga.

Our mission is to provide FREE education, support, and advocacy to people with mental illness and their families. We also work to raise awareness about mental illness issues and put an end to stigma.

We recognize that mental illnesses are brain disorders, medical conditions from which recovery is possible.  The trauma of mental illness directly impacts the family, friends and loved ones of the person who has an illness, and these people, too, need help  and can play a pivotal supporting role in an individual's recovery.

Our Goal is to ensure that every person who has a mental illness has adequate access to medical care, medications, therapy, reliable-accurate information, and a supportive community of assistance.

We understand that coping with mental illness can be overwhelming.

We know. We've been there. We can help!
For many of us, finding NAMI-Glendale was the beginning of hope and recovery. NAMI-Glendale provides hope and help through education, support and advocacy.
