NMCF Announces Two Grant Recipients

New Mexico Community Foundation has awarded two grants totaling $16,500 to nonprofit organizations serving the northeastern part of the state, specifically communities in San Miguel, Mora, and Harding Counties.

Grant recipients, First Born of Northern NM  and NDI-NM  Pecos Elementary program, were selected to support programs within the focus areas of Health Awareness and Disease Prevention. This funding was made possible through NMCF's Northeastern Regional Community Fund, which seeks to improve health and decrease the prevalence of disease in a seven county region of northeastern NM.

Pecos Elementary School 3rd graders perform their NDI finale for classmates and faculty.

From New Mexico's only statewide community foundation, these funds represent a unique and much needed opportunity to fund organizations in rural parts of the state, especially in historically underserved communities of northeastern New Mexico.

Fund Spotlight: Anita Salas Memorial Fund

Prior to the Anita Salas Memorial Fund's founding in 1998, women in New Mexico often delayed recommended medical services for breast and/or cervical cancer
diagnosis and treatment due to insufficient personal resources and disqualification from state and federal assistance.

The Anita Salas Memorial Fund helps moderate to low-income, under-insured or uninsured New Mexican women pay for breast and cervical cancer treatment or related bills such as transportation, lodging, and medications for treatment. The funds go directly to the women's bills.

For the third consecutive year, the Albuquerque Women's Golf Championship &  NM/West Texas Women's Amateur have partnered to hold a tournament to benefit the Anita Salas Memorial Fund. The Tournament will be  held at the Santa Ana Golf Club on July 15-17, 2017. Learn how you can sponsor the Tournament by contacting Kathy Morrow at (505) 620-5291.

Remembering Lexie Shabel

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing in May of an incredible community activist and trailblazer, Lexie Shabel, director of the Breast Wishes Fund, a fiscally sponsored partner project of NMCF.

Lexie was a resilient and fierce fighter for exploring alternative choices for breast cancer treatment, especially to the uninsured.  She started Breast Wishes in 2010 to give women immune enhancing and cancer reducing and  eliminating options for breast cancer treatment and prevention.

Lexie herself was battling breast cancer and controlled any new growth for 12 years without utilizing conventional treatments.  She started a documentary film as director and producer, called "the ME film," the day she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The film, reflecting Lexie's quest for a new paradigm of breast cancer treatment, was featured in her TEDxABQ Women talk in 2012 entitled " When Did Our Breasts Become an Accessory? "  We will miss Lexie's fire, compassion, and camaraderie.
