New Grants System: smARTDE
We’re excited to announce that beginning this summer, the Division will be moving to a new online grant application and management system–smARTDE. This system will replace the Division’s existing eGrant system, offering a much more robust, user-friendly, and stable platform for all users–grant applicants, reviewers, onsite evaluators, and staff. All existing grant application data will be transferred to smARTDE.

Applicants/Grantees will be able to log in to apply for future grant opportunities, and also to see grant history, current grant payment schedule, panel comments, onsite evaluations, and more. SmARTDE will also be the registration portal for the Poetry Out Loud program, event registrations, and Mezzanine Gallery applications.

Beginning in 2019, smARTDE will also accept Individual Artist Fellowship applications. Until then, applicants will apply as normal through Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation's eGrant system.

To orient applicants/grantees to the new system, a series of statewide in-person meetings and webinars have been scheduled to help users understand the new smARTDE system.

From the Director
Each summer the Division of the Arts collaborates with the Division of Libraries and the Division of Parks and Recreation to bring arts programming to communities throughout the state. This year, more than 30 libraries across Delaware will feature New Moon Theater and Baba Bomani as part of their summer reading program. In addition, the Division is collaborating with Autism Delaware to present Turtle Dance Music in sensory-friendly performances in all three counties as a kick-off event for the summer program.

Likewise, state parks across the state, from White Clay Creek to Cape Henlopen, will present summer arts programming . Cultural events will include storyteller Bill Lepp, Brown Box Theater Players, folk singer John Flynn, a marine debris exhibit, and more.

The Division of the Arts is proud of these ongoing partnerships, helping us to reach thousands of youth and adults in the summer months in non-traditional venues across the state. For these and other arts activities this summer, we invite you to explore DelawareScene.com. You'll be glad you did!
Meet the Artist Fellows
David P. Konzinski
Established Professional, Literature: Poetry
Kozinski grew up in Wilmington, part of an accomplished musical family, so melody and cadence are deeply embedded in his poems. His work is filled with harmony and counterpoint, but unlike music, writing mandates that only one voice can speak at a time. So he works to incorporate patterns of contemporary speech and the “syncopation and cross-rhythms found in jazz and other musical forms.”

Lauren E. Peters
Emerging Professional, Visual Arts: Painting
Exploring issues of appearance, identity and sexuality, Lauren E. Peters has studied the legendary statue of Venus de Milo, making that marble icon the subject of her college thesis exhibition. But a continuing search for female symbols to study, interpret and paint led the Wilmington artist to her current practice – painting large-scale self-portraits.

ArCH Recap
Arts, Culture & Heritage Preservation Field Days or ArCH is a program designed to engage 4th grade students in exploring Delaware’s past and present through hands-on activity stations located throughout the First State Heritage Park and the First State National Historical Park in Dover.

This year, 24 partner organizations hosted 1,357 students from five Delaware School Districts and two charter schools. The Delaware Division of the Arts participated with a visual arts activity focused on the design of the Old State House.
On the Mezzanine
Trace by Carlos Alejandro
Cementerio de Guiones , 10" x 14",
Palladium print on Hahnemuhle photo rag, 2013
Carlos Alejandro’s Trace, an exhibition of black and white fine art photography, will be on view in the Mezzanine Gallery from now through June 29, 2018. The subjects in the photographs range from delicate ghost ferns to scenes from Cuba to religious artifacts. The unifying theme is an interest in capturing traces of history, intuition, influence, artifacts, paths, and vestiges.

The images are captured on a digital camera but printed in analog materials like palladium and other elements. A number of the photographs will be displayed in vintage frames that Alejandro has purchased at auction. Trace is Alejandro’s first solo exhibition of fine art photography in Delaware since the 1990s.

Learn more about Alejandro with our YouTube Meet the Artist video series.
The Mezzanine Gallery, open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is located in the
Carvel State Office Building, 820 N. French Street, Wilmington.

On-Site Evaluators Needed
If you love the arts and actively participate in programs or attend events, you may be a candidate to serve as an on-site evaluator for the Division. We are currently seeking to expand our list of potential evaluators who are dependable, articulate observers with knowledge in one or more art forms (you do not need to be professionally trained in the arts).

Evaluators generally attend and produce a written review of two or more programs each year, including performances, exhibits, workshops or classes, and more. Experience new art forms and see more of Delaware’s treasures while serving a vital role in the review of grant-funded programs. If interested, please complete the On-Site Evaluator Self-Nomination Form and return it to Katie.West@state.de.us .
The Division has embarked on a year-long digital advertising campaign to increase reach and engagement on DelawareScene.com . We remind and recommend that organizations, businesses and individual artists, submit their 2018 events as soon as they are scheduled, and no later than the recommended deadlines below. Submit now
