WE'RE STARTING TO SEE ALOT OF BAIT

Where there is bait, there is fish. For the last couple of months, it has been blowing so much that its been hard to tell how much bait is around. On a recent scouting trip, I fished some calm water along the river bank and found alot more bait than I had expected. This is a pic of only one of several bait balls that were in the area. And yes, I was awarded with a nice slot drum. On a trip last week, I found the bait pushed into a cove and the customer caught his largest trout ever.
FLOUNDER TARGETS

June is when I start fishing for flounder harder. The water temperature is in the upper 70's and the bait has usually arrived. During the summer months, I target the sandier shoals and banks more than I do the muddier banks. Also, I like to see some grass in the area which is a natural hiding place for bait fish. My bait of choice for the summer is finger mullets on carolina rigs. Menhaden works good also, but they die quicker than mullet in the warmer water. Remember to temper your hook set. If I think I have a flounder bite, I count to 10 before I set the hook. Some days I count a litter faster than others.
OUR STATE FISH

Redfish grow about an inch a month for their first couple years of life. And then around 28", they begin to spawn. Also, they stay local until they become spawners. So the slots that we're catching along the river banks now were the results of the 2016 spawn and the puppies in the creeks and river were the 2017 class. The great news is that we're starting to see some 30"- 40" reds show up. They're not in big quantities like we'll see in 1-2 months. But they do have our attention.
SPECK SEASON OPENS JUNE 15

The fall of 2017 was the best speck fishing that I can remember in a long time. And the spring of 2018 was about as anti-climatic as I can remember because of the closure. People have many opinions about how bad the cold hurt our trout population. Trout season opens back up on June 15 and we're probably getting ready to find out. Because of the closure, our demand for trout trips has been down. Remember that trout have soft lips so don't get excited and go ripping them. Our next hook up never made it to the boat. If it had been a marlin, we would've had him.
BE SAFE OUT THERE
On my way home from a cobia trip on the ICW, I saw this tragedy. Thankfully the 5 on board got off safely, but their Viking didn't fare as well. Make sure your radio works in case you need help or someone else does. Make sure you have the correct quantity of functional fire extinguisher(s) on board. Make sure you have Coast Guard approved pfd's for all passengers. If you hear a "mayday" distress call, it means that there is an immediate danger to someone's life. If you hear a "pan-pan" distress call, it means that there is a situation of urgency.
