Enjoy summer 2018 at Shepards Marina!
A big welcome to all our readers, whether you’ve been coming to Shepards Marina for many years, or have just signed up to our newsletters to find out more about what we do.

Shepards Marina is one of Cowes Harbour’s main marina facilities and we offer a full range of services and amenities perfect for yacht racing events and rallies, and also catering very much to the cruising sailor and powerboater. Our family-friendly marina has room for 130 visiting boats, we have 40 resident berth holders, and we specialise in providing dry sailing packages for day class yachts, RIBs, motorboats, and trailered keelboats.

If you haven’t yet discovered our Events Centre on the Marina waterfront, then head down to see The Sugar Store . Holding a coveted position on the River Medina and with stunning Solent views, The Sugar Store is available for event bookings from Easter to the end of October. Why not hold your rally, class championship, sail training day, conference, wedding reception or private party at The Sugar Store? Give us a call on 01983 297821 or come and visit us to take a look around.

Just 51 days to go and counting before Lendy Cowes Week 2018! Have you booked your berth yet? If not, then there is still time to do so. See online for full information.

Meet our team
Here we would like to introduce you to two of our Shepards Marina team who will go above and beyond to ensure that your stay with us is as enjoyable as possible!
Simon Banks - Marina Team Leader
Simon Banks joined the Cowes Harbour team in October 2014 as a Port Operative. In 2016 he transferred to Shepards Marina and became our first dedicated Dry Sailing Coordinator. Following this, in summer 2017 Simon was appointed as Team Leader for the Marina, dry sailing, and our Sugar Store Events Centre.

Simon said: “It has been a real pleasure progressing my career as part of the Cowes Harbour Commission team. I love the variety of work within my role, as well as meeting new people on a daily basis. I am very much an outdoors person and I get plenty of opportunity to be outside, enjoying the good weather, and maintaining my tan!”
Simon Willis - Harbour Patrol Officer and Berthing Master
Simon Willis started part-time at Shepards Marina in October 2016, assisting with berthing and dry sailing and has now been taken on full time as a Berthing Master and Harbour Patrol Officer.

“Being a sailor myself," said Simon, "and working in the sailing community allows me to meet and interact with people who have similar interests. Providing a happy and safe environment in the Marina, even on the most challenging days with 50 plus vessels to fit in, is very rewarding.”
"Cowes at Shepards" Lendy Cowes Week 3-11th August 2018

6 top tips for a safe summer afloat
Be prepared and be safe with practical safety guidance and tips for all boat users.

The RYA has issued a Safety Advisory Leaflet featuring six key topics for staying safe and enjoying your time afloat:

1. Will your liferaft float free or sink your boat? The correct stowing of liferafts should be an important part of any passage preparation. Liferafts must be capable of being launched quickly and easily in an emergency.
2. Clip on with care. Prevent lateral loading on safety line hooks. They must be free to rotate to align the load longitudinally, so should be arranged to ensure that the hook cannot become entangled with deck fittings or other equipment.
3. DIY boat electrics. Although 12V DC systems on recreational craft are unlikely to create an electrocution hazard, there are dangers that may catch out the amateur DIYer.
4. Fire safety. The RYA provides advice on fire prevention and fire-fighting equipment on its Sea Boating hub at .
5. Lobster pots. Snagging something on your prop, keel or rudder can cause problems ranging from the tiresome to the terrible. Avoid jumping in to try and clear it, unless conditions are suitable and you are confident in your abilities.
6. See and be seen. The International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea specify the display of internationally-understood lights that shall be complied with from sunset to sunrise.
