june2018aodc News from Art on the Divide

Art On the Divide Cooperative gallery proudly opened its doors in June 2010 and invited the community to a Garden Party Celebration . Each year we continue this tradition and this June, in addition to our twelve local artists displaying their favorites, we will have a special Guest Show.
AODC celebrates the 8th anniversary of the gallery's opening with David Yapp, Watercolors and Oil Paintings, on display June 1- July 1. The public is invited to the Garden Party and Reception on June 10th from 1-5 p.m. Our member artists wish to extend a big thank you to all our customers and supporters and look forward to seeing everyone at the gallery's biggest event of the year. After viewing the art, stroll the historic rose garden while enjoying music and refreshments.
David Yapp was born in Salisbury, England in 1966. While studying wildlife illustration in Carmarthen, Wales, he developed a love of painting and sketching on location. David moved to San Francisco in 2002. Inspired by California's ongoing plein air tradition and the state's Mediterranean light, he now focuses his energies on capturing images of the landscape in oils and watercolors. He currently lives in the western Sierra foothills.
In addition , visit the gallery at 2pm, on Saturday, June 16 for a plein air painting demonstration. During the demonstration David will explain the processes and techniques he uses to capture California's beautiful mountain scenery in oils.
AODC gallery is located at 6295 Main Street in Georgetown, between the fire station and the American River Inn. Summer hours, starting in June, are Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursdays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 333-2787 or visit the website at www.artonthedivide.com . You can see David's work at davidyapp.com .

July Challenge

The challenges we've had at recent meetings seem to have been well-received, so we're having another one in July.  There's plenty of time and we really hope you'll participate.  This will be a color challenge.

Create a new piece with a color palette that you form from:  your least favorite color, its complement, and a few analogous colors.  Any subject/media is welcome.  Can't wait to see what you create!
From the Editor
I've been thinking about the challenge for July and was pondering what palette to use.  I like most colors.  But there's one complementary pair that I just can't stand - yellow and purple - yuck!

I was in the garden last week deadheading roses when I accidentally clipped off a rose that I didn't intend to remove, so I decided to build a bouquet around it.  I thought the colors were somewhat unusual, but I liked them.

Then I realized that I was looking at the hated yellow and purple - but I liked it!

I have my pallette!  Hope you have yours!

June Program
Artist and teacher, Jennifer Laurel Keller will be at our June 10 meeting. While teaching a wide range of classes at University Art, her class on mixed-media collage is very popular.
MIXED-MEDIA COLLAGE is an exciting art form. Jennifer will share her techniques for creating a meaningful art piece. Found objects, fabric and paper combine is many creative ways bringing new meaning to your finished piece. Balanced composition, color control and background design that supports the whole are important with this technique.
Jennifer Keller tells us the great thing about collage is it allows you to produce wonderful art and thoughtful content whether you can draw or not. It's for everyone. See more of her work and classes at her website: JenniferLaurelKeller.com
We hope to see you at the meeting on June 10.
