Pedal Patter June 2018
by Bob Bernstein

I hope that this finds you all enjoying the pleasures of your wheeled, human powered conveyances regardless of the number of wheels; regardless whether you are leaning forward, sitting upright, or sitting back; regardless of whether you are wearing spandex or a tee shirt and jeans.

“April showers bring May flowers.” This ditty has been around for as long as I can remember, and I’m no spring chicken! The implication here is that the showers stop and the flowers bloom. Unfortunately, the rain has not stopped. This has severely impacted my riding, not to mention destroying my hometown, Ellicott City, once again. The ditty “Rain, rain, go away, come again another day.” may finally have been heard. Hopefully, now that June is here, we will be able to dry out and stretch our legs.

There are many rides listed on our website to help us get back into cycling shape...

Why Attend the Back Roads Century?
by Sallie Williams, VP - Century

Shepherdstown hosts the Back Roads Century again September 16,2018!   It’s a charming little college town with a vibrant artisan culture. It’s scenic, overlooking the Potomac at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It’s steeped in Civil War history with Antietam and Harper’s Ferry a stone’s throw away. And it’s a bicycling mecca. It’s a perfect setting for the Back Roads Century on September 16, 2018.

June 16, 9 AM
Black Hill Regional Park (Boyds, MD)
This is the 23 rd  annual ride from Black Hill Regional Park! This multi-grade, pot-luck picnic ride is a great time for all. Bring the family and let them play by the lake or hike the park trails while you blast the hills.

The club is reissuing its 50th Anniversary Jerseys for a brief time. Jerseys must be ordered by midnight on June 21.  Products will be shipped to you in late July by 1st class mail. The cost of $65 includes shipping and handling.

June 28, 5-8 PM
Bar Roubaix ( 1400 Irving St NW, Washington, DC)
Join us for the first summer PPTC happy hour! Bar Roubaix is a cyclist's paradise located in Columbia Heights- everything from a menu fit for a Giro d'Italia spectator, to ice cold local and Belgian brews, to impressive decor, to cycling races shown on the TV! It's a perfect central location for Potomac Pedalers to meet up and plan their weekend warrior activities.

Neither rain, nor wind, nor gloom of, er, morning stayed our commuters from the swift completion of their Bike to Work Day! On May 18th, thousands of area cyclists put on their favorite rain gear and pedaled their way to work. Potomac Pedalers was a Bronze Sponsor for the event. While the weather posed a challenge for the riders, our PPTC volunteers welcomed them warmly to five of the largest regional pit stops...

Why a Women's Group?

This questions comes up every so often and its not always with a positive intent. The best example is from the month of May.

An Essay:
by Anne Hyman, Vice President - Special Events
I’ve always been a competitive person. In grade school, I would pout on the playground if I wasn’t picked in the top three to join a recess game of kickball. It was never enough for me to just present my research at graduate school symposia, I was out for an award every time. I get the biggest rush from standing a couple of inches taller on a podium after a race.
Being competitive is exhausting . ...
