Governance
The VSB president’s committee on well-being released its final report identifying specific aspects or characteristics of the practice of law that might serve as a risk to a lawyer’s well-being.

Nota Bene: All professional business entities formed with the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) for the sole and specific purpose of rendering the service of the practice of law in Virginia must register with the Virginia State Bar .
 
An advisory committee on the  Rules of Court of the Supreme Court of Virginia   is seeking public comment  on revising the rules as they pertain to the use of the  potentially ambiguous word “shall. ” Deadline for comment is July 12.

Compliance
Check your mail  – Dues statements will be mailed June 15. Beginning June 19, you may pay your dues and fees, certify your liability insurance coverage, change your status, and join VSB sections online.

Pro Bono
Virginia lawyers toured the facilities used for VCU Health’s Medical-Legal Partnership this month. Learn more about the program and its pro bono opportunities.
 
Thinking about retiring? Switch your membership status to  Emeritus . Eligible lawyers are dues-free if they practice solely pro bono in affiliation with a qualified legal services provider.  Learn more and start the transition to emeritus status at any time.
Awards

Randy Nelson  of Lynchburg  is this year’s winner  of the  Tradition of Excellence  Award sponsored by the General Practice Section .  
The Young Lawyers Conference has named Nicolle Vasquez Del Favero of Hampton Roads this year’s R. Edwin Burnette Jr. Young Lawyer of the Year .
The Hill Tucker Bar Association has been named Bar Association of the Year for 2019 for extensive projects involving education, mentoring, and pro bono.
Barbara Anderson  of Alexandria has been chosen  Local Bar Leader of the Year  for 2019 for her decades of service to the Alexandria Bar Association.
Sarah M. Saville  of Newport News has been chosen as the  Specialty Bar Leader of the Year  for her work with the Greater Peninsula Women’s Bar Association
Six Bar associations from across the Commonwealth have received Awards of Merit for projects that enhance the profession, the community, and access to justice.

The above awards will be presented at the VSB Annual Meeting in Virginia Beach in two weeks.
Congratulations are in order for the Young Lawyers Conference , who won first place in a national competition for the pre-law institute that they co-sponsor with the Diversity Conference
The Health Law section’s writing competition for students at Virginia law schools for the 2018-19 academic year has selected this year’s three top entries and awarded prizes totaling $3,000.  Jonah Hein of UVA Law took first place, winning $1500.
The Virginia Lawyer Referral Service needs lawyers to take pre-screened referrals in the following areas:
