Nevada Builders Blueprint
June 2019

Aaron Headshot
From the CEO
The 2019 Session of the Nevada Legislature is now closed, and it was rough.  So many significant changes impacting business, education, housing, etc. There is a lot to get through but please read THIS which focuses on the biggest bills impacting the construction industry specifically.  The political landscape is very different and it could have been a lot worse.  The Governor still has the potential to truly help housing and veto SB151, which was amended in secret and passed out in the 11th hour.  Please reach out to us with any questions and look forward to announcements on how we hope to expand tools for our members to mitigate some of the changes.

Have you heard of Work-Based Learning  ? In 2017 Nevada Legislature passed SB66 which, among other things, required all Nevada School Districts to establishing educational strategies that offer students the opportunity to connect classroom learning to authentic business/industry experiences. This is done through career exploration and various activities including informational interviews, industry tours, job shadowing and pre-apprenticeships. Nevada Builders has been involved with developing an innovative Tri-County program called Career Bound NV  . This collaboration with JOIN, Inc., Washoe County School District, Carson City School District, Douglas School District and various business and governmental agencies will work to connect students to in-demand careers throughout the region. For more information  click here  then ask us how you can get involved!
Nevada Builders has also been working with the Clark County School District, Workforce Connections and industry leaders to help make the construction trades more accessible for CCSD students.  Currently, there are several working groups addressing the following issues: Early exposure, Streamlining Access, Messaging and the Licensing Process. We welcome any insights, suggestions or participation.

Bidding Safety in your Project
Plan Ahead
Budgeting safety into the job bid is vital to your success. If you don't package safety costs into bids, and you haven't spent big money after a safety incident yet, you're lucky. Safety is just a cost of doing good business. The days are long gone when crews walked skyscraper beams not tied off and enjoyed a beer at lunch. Federal and state laws, a performance-based labor force and economy, as well as increased competitiveness among contractors, continue to close the gap on safety short cuts.

Let's use falls, the biggest cause of construction fatalities, as an example. Of course, the worst part of a job-site death is the loss of human life and the ripple effect on the worker's family and friends. We know the contractor also suffers in the aftermath. Lost production due to deflated morale is almost impossible to measure in dollars. OSHA fines combined with legal costs can end up in the millions in the blink of
an eye. What if all it took to prevent the fatality was retiring and replacing a damaged lanyard or harness?
The same dollar spent to address a safety hazard in the planning phase costs three to four dollars to fix once operations have begun. And of course, what you'll spend in the aftermath of a fatality far exceeds what you'll spend to plan for or to abate the hazards prior to starting the job. Safety professionals train diligently to conduct an effective accident investigation, but the best use of their time is to engage the hazards before the workers encounter them. Why not have someone in your corner to help maximize profits by managing risk before it hurts the company and its workers?
Would you like assistance evaluating safety hazards before work begins? Would it help you bid safety into your projects?
