Board members praised the workshop on Strategic Plan Implementation that highlighted the colleges’ and District Services achievements for 2018-19 and looked ahead to the opportunities for 2019-20. Board Member Debbie Justeson said she was excited to hear about the progress that the college district has been making to enhance the student experience. Board Member Elena Adams thanked the presenters for the work they put into making the presentation so that the board got a snapshot of what is happening at the colleges. Board Member Bill Garrett said the report was extraordinarily well done and he was impressed with the work that went into it, and Board Member Brad Monroe agreed that the plans were well-presented. Board President Linda Cartwright said she learned much from the presentation.
Grossmont College Student Trustee Amy Bianchi said she met with the Associated Students president and is excited to be working with him this year. She will be attending a conference on student leadership.
Cuyamaca College Student Trustee Sonia Mendoza-Reyes reported that she participated in the San Diego Pride parade, and will be working on activities for Welcome Week.
At its July 16 meeting, the Governing Board:
  • Announced the California School Employees Association proposal related to negotiations. The District’s proposal was to be discussed in closed session.
  • Accepted minor revisions to a College and Career Access Pathways Partnership Agreement between the District and Helix Charter High School.
  • Approved a short-term action plan regarding Guided Pathways that are focused on a set of guiding questions designed to help the CEO and board members identify leadership steps for institutional change.
  • Adopted college goals aligned with the Vision for Success, along with plans to guide how the colleges will use state resources consistent with the Guided Pathways framework.
  • Reviewed and updated Board Policies and Administrative Procedures 4227, Repeatable Courses; 5050, Student Success and Support Program; and Board Policy 5142, Academic Appeals.
  • Approved awards of $500,000 each for Grossmont and Cuyamaca colleges as part of the Skills Building for Technologies Project, which will create opportunities for students to earn certificates through online hybrid instruction linked to multiple career pathways.
  • Approved a resolution to establish authority to contract with the California Department of Education to provide child care and development services at the Grossmont and Cuyamaca colleges Child Care Centers.
  • Approved a resolution renewing the District’s eligibility to participate in the Federal Surplus Property Donation Program.
  • Approved the annual declaration of surplus property under the Education Code.
  • Approved issuing a bid to renovate and upgrade the Heritage of the Americas Museum.

A report on aligning the state chancellor’s Vision for Success goals with work at the colleges was given by Catherine Webb, Senior Dean, College Planning and Institutional Effectiveness at Grossmont College and Brianna Hays, Senior Dan of Institutional Effectiveness, Success and Equity and Accreditation Liaison Officer at Cuyamaca College.
Chancellor Cindy Miles noted that Facilities Project Status Reports, providing updates on campus construction, are now included in the Governing Board agenda along with the site reports each month.
Miles said that Representative Susan Davis visited Cuyamaca College to see the Career Compass Summer Program, which gives high school students the opportunity to learn about a variety of careers.
Grossmont College held a family orientation day, which allows family members of new students to learn about what to expect at the college. More than 100 family members attended.
Campus and Parking Services is now offering a new emergency preparedness app for your smart phone called Our Plan that provides information on steps to take in a number of emergency scenarios. To download the app, open a browser on your smart phone and go to https://grossmont-280d5.web.app/ Using the prompts, select “Add to Home Screen.”
Students and staff from the District participated in the San Diego Pride Parade. This is the third year that the District has marched in the parade, the largest single-day civic event in the region.

About 350,000 people participated this year, making it one of the nation's largest Pride parades.
