C ounting down to the Summer Reading Blast-Off!!

Thi s year's summer reading program "A Universe of Stories" is incredibly exciting because of local heroes Scott and Mark Kelly aka "the Kelly Twins," who began their stories right here in West Orange! The library is counting down the days until Monday, June 24 when we kick-off our summer reading with a family event featuring Currier's Magical Mania from 6:30-8:30 PM. The event will include a live DJ, dancing, face painting, and more.

Wednesday, June 26, the library will host a Teen Kick-Off with Eric Dasher's Galactic Teen Trivia. Teens will have a chance to match wits with their peers in a fun social environment. Make sure to signup in advance through the library calendar to attend each program.

While the school year is winding down, the library is gearing for a summer of fun! This month the Youth Services Department is continuing the popular Creature Comfort program of reading to therapy dogs. Lego Club is going strong, as are the Speaking of Stories and Yakety Yak Book Clubs. Children will also have a chance to "meet" a T-Rex when Field-Station Dinosaur comes to visit for some pre-summer fun. The Teen Department will have their monthly meeting of T.A.G. to help brainstorm for successful events this summer. Teens can also discuss their favorite comic books at the Teen Comic Book Club, showcase their game skills on Game Night, dance the night away at the Pride Party, and save the world with strategy in Dungeons and Dragons.

Th e monthly book discussion for adults will meet to discuss "A Bear, A Backpack, and Eight Crates of Vodka." Adults will also be able to share their work during the West Orange Poetry Workshop, learn defensive driving techniques through AARP the Defensive Driving class, dance to Phil Passantino's Cumbia band, learn composting basics, and see two feature films "Can You Ever Forgive Me?" and "If Beale Street Could Talk." The library will also showcase an art exhibit of local LGBTQ artists throughout the month of June.

Last month the library hosted two successful musical programs as well as several programs celebrating Haitian Heritage Month. Youth Services wrapped up their Spring story times and the Edison National Park Rangers visited so that kids could meet a Ranger. All fourth grade attendees received a free national park pass as a part of their "Every Kid in a Park" initiative. The library also hosted the Middle School Art Reception. Teens had a viewing of the feature film "The Hate U Give" as well as their monthly club meetings.

Did you know? In December 1884, the Orange Library opened for residents of "all the Oranges." Over the next 26 years, four branches were established in West Orange. Do you know the locations?

A Note from the Friends of the West Orange Public Library:
We had a successful Plant & Book Sale earlier in May, raising money that will go towards the library's Summer Reading Program and other Library needs. Thank you to everyone that came out. It was wonderful to get the chance to talk and meet many of you.

Where can you find us next? We'll be at the West Orange Street Fair on Saturday, June 1st. Stop by our table to learn more about how to get involved with the Friends. We'll have coloring activities for the children and will be selling DVDs and CDs.

When we're not out and about, we can always be found online at https://www.wopl.org/friends and on Facebook. All Friends members are encouraged to attend our monthly meeting, held on the 2nd Thursday of the month.
