Feed A Child
Feed-A-Child Yancey County was started by Robert and Glenda Wyatt about 12 years ago.. It helps feed over 400 students from primary to high school that would not have food to eat over the weekend. The bags are filled every Tuesday or Wednesday and delivered to the schools by Friday and distributed to the students by teachers and guidance counselors. Higgins fills bags the second Tuesday of each month. We have been fortunate to have enough volunteers to fill the bags so far. They are going to continue the program  this summer through the churches in the county that have Wednesday night meals. There are ongoing needs for money and certain types of foods as well as volunteering to fill bags.  If you have any questions about Feed-A-Child they can be directed to Bill & Nancy Watkins at 828-675-5367.

        CELEBRATE  RECOVERY
This month our congregation will begin a new ministry called Celebrate Recovery. This is a Christ - centered recovery ministry designed to help people find freedom from their hurts, hang- ups, and habits. John Baker founded this ministry at Saddleback Church in California, with his pastor Rick Warren. Together they developed eight choices that promise true happiness and transformation. In the excellent book Life's Healing Choices  Warren writes:   "Do you ever eat or drink more calories that your body needs? Do you ever feel you ought to exercise but don't do it? Do you ever know something is wrong but do it anyway? If you answered yes to any of the questions above, you'll know without a doubt that you are a citizen of the human race." Pastor Rick discovered these eight choices that can transform us by studying the Beatitudes of Jesus from the Sermon on the Mount.

CHOICES THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE

R ealize I'm not God. I admit that I am powerless to control my tendency to do the wrong thing and that my life is unmanageable. Happy are those who know they are spiritually poor.
E arnestly believe that God exists, that I matter to Him, and that He has the power to help me recover.   Happy are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
C onsciously choose to commit all my life and will to Christ's care and control.
Happy are the meek
O penly examine and confess my faults to myself, to God, and to someone I trust.
Happy are the pure in heart
V oluntarily submit to every change God wants to make in my life and humbly ask Him to remove my character defects. Happy are those whose greatest desire is to do what God requires
E valuate all my relationships. Offer forgiveness to those who have hurt me and make amends for the harms I've done to others, except when to do so would harm them or others.
Happy are those who are merciful & Happy are those who work for peace
R eserve a daily time with God for self- examination, Bible reading, and prayer in order to know God and His will for my life and to gain power to follow His will
Y ield myself to God to be used to bring Good News to others, both by my example and by my words.  Happy are those who are persecuted because they do what God requires

This summer I want to invite you to explore these Healing Choices at Higgins on Wednesday evenings. Pray that God will use this ministry to transform the lives of many in our community with the Hope and Healing Grace of Jesus Christ!

Mission Opportunities
Summer Mission Opportunities at Higgins

Multi-generational Summer Mission Trip

This summer, we will again head to the eastern part of North Carolina to aid in hurricane relief efforts through UMCOR, the United Methodist disaster relief agency. Our trip this year will be to Wilmington, leaving Sunday, July 14 and returning Saturday, July 20.  As last year, this will be an opportunity for building relationships across the generations within our church family, while helping those impacted by hurricane Florence.  Pencil in this date on your calendar and be on the lookout for an initial information session to be held in the next few weeks.  Contact David Bush 284-9401 or Jake 208-3126.

Reconciliation House Construction

Much needed expansion of Rec House facilitates will begin soon.   As we have always done, Higgins will have the opportunity to play a major role by volunteering "hands on" during the construction process.    Our goal is to have members pledge 2,000 hours to assist during the course of the project.  There will be many ways to help over a period of several months. We have begun a good old fashion pledge drive to line up volunteers and skills for this "local mission" project.

Stay tuned as this project literally comes out of the ground in our backyard, continuing to serve the needs of those around us - just as Jesus commanded us to do.

Kathie Lee Gifford took a trip to Israel and fell in love with the country. In this book she gives an overview of each site she visits and then historical background from the Rabbi. Nice reading before you make the trip. Or a good mental picture if you don't plan to go there!
"YOU KNOW THE BIBLE TALKS ABOUT "IN HIM WE LIVE AND MOVE AND HAVE OUR
BEING". THAT MEANS EVERY NANOSECOND OF OUR LIFE."

Kathie Lee Gifford,  The Rock, the Road and The Rabbi

Do you have times of sleeplessness when the same thoughts swirl round and round in your mind and
you just can't stop them? In this current divisive time we live in I think most of us can say yes. There is
a way to break that cycle.
"Discover inner space by creating gaps in the stream of thinking. Without these gaps, your thinking
becomes repetitive, uninspired, devoid of any creative spark, which is how it is with most people on the
planet. You don't need to be concerned by the duration of these gaps. A few seconds is good enough.
Gradually they will lengthen by themselves. Most importantly is that their length is to bring them in
frequently so that your daily activities and your stream of thinking become interspersed with space.
BE AWARE OF YOUR BREATHING. NOTICE HOW THIS TAKES ATTENTION AWAY FROM
YOUR THINKING AND CREATES SPACE.
Eckhart Tolle, Oneness With All Life

In the book "Holy Envy" Ms. Taylor talks about her experience of teaching Religion 101. She and her
students visited various religious holy sanctuaries in Atlanta and talked with the leaders there. She says
she learned more respect for the various religions and a firmer belief in her own religious choice. At the
same time she saw various tenets of each which could enhance our Christianity.

"WE SHOULDN'T COMPARE OUR BEST IN CHRISTIANITY, TO THE WORST OF MUSLIMS.
BUT OUR BEST TO THEIR BEST. IN THIS WAY EACH BECOMES BETTER IN ITS OWN
DISTINCT WAY.
Barbara Brown Taylor, Holy Envy
