A Tribute To Our Fathers
We asked members of our team why they appreciate having their fathers in their lives.

STAY OUT OF JAIL: TIPS TO AVOID BEING ARRESTED THIS SUMMER
After working with thousands of clients , we’ve noticed a trend: more people are arrested while driving during the summer versus the rest of the year. Something about longer hours of daylight, summer vacations, parties, and outdoor summer activities, causes people to drive more often and therefore increases the possibility of getting pulled over. Many people who are undocumented drive without a license, including most of our detained clients. We advise our clients to refrain from driving without a license because it’s illegal and too often leads to ICE arrest and deportation.

Remember that we are living under the Trump Administration . Detention of undocumented immigrants is at an all time high. Something as “small” as driving without a license can be the reason for your arrest, the reason for family separation and hardship, the reason your family loses their home, the reason your children suffer emotional and psychological trauma, and the reason you give away everything you have worked for in the US.

ICE agents are waiting and looking for you to make a mistake . The local police in your county and state is also helping them. Our clients are mostly arrested while driving to or from work and while driving to or from a social event such as a party, family gathering, nightclub, etc… Below are some tips to help you avoid being arrested for driving without a license:

-Ask someone who has a driver’s license to drive you.
When going out to a social event where you might drink alcohol, always have a designated driver. Ask someone else to drive and get their commitment that they are not going to drink and drive. This can be someone going to the event or someone who will do you a favor and drive you there.

You can also use this method for work. Do you have a co-worker who has a driver’s license? Ask him to drive you to and from work in exchange for you to cover part his gas expenses. You get a stress free ride everyday and your friend saves on gas.

-Use other methods of transportation

Ride sharing: You can download the Uber or Lyft app on your cell phone and use this service to get to your destination. The app charges fees based on how many miles it takes to get somewhere. You will need a debit card or credit card in order to pay for your ride. The driver’s are not allowed to accept cash.

Taxi: Similar to Uber and Lyft but here you need to find a local company and community “taxi man” to drive you to your destination. This option allows you to pay cash and negotiate the fee with the driver. This is more common in the immigrant community, and has been a reliable source of transportation.

Public Transportation: This is an option for people who live in a city or town that offers public transportation such as bus or train. The benefit is low cost travel and a schedule that you can always use to plan your ride.

Bicycle: Biking to work is fun and gives you the opportunity to get some fresh air. It’s also a good workout that helps you stay fit and healthy. Lastly, it can save you thousands of dollars on gas and auto expenses.

-NEVER drink and drive. It’s that simple. You are putting your life at risk and everyone else who is out in public.

Although these tips may seem like an inconvenience, it will save you and your family from stress, separation, trauma and expenses in attorney’s fee and government fees.

We hope that none of our clients are arrested for driving without a license or diving under the influence of alcohol but if this happens, always remember to call us immediately so that we can notify your family and begin working on getting you out of jail.

Tanya is our lead attorney at the Birmingham, AL office. She joined our team in 2017, she works mostly with Alabama clients, and has a positive energy that is contagious.

Tanya, what do you do at the firm?
"I am an attorney. I help immigrants secure their future and reach their goal of becoming citizens by defending them in Immigration court proceedings and/or guiding them through the USCIS process."

Why do you practice immigration law?
"Born in Georgia and raised in Alabama, I spent my childhood traveling the world and discovering history, different peoples, and different cultures. These experiences inspired me to want to make a difference in the world. Upon graduating from law school, I spent many years working in all areas of the law, however, I never forgot my dream of making a difference in the world and in 2013 I moved to Costa Rica to learn Spanish. In 2015, I returned to the United States to begin working with the immigrant population, one of the most marginalized and discriminated against populations of this country."

“You began learning Spanish a few years ago and continue actively studying the language. Why is this important to you?
"In order to best help the immigrant community, I felt I needed to be able to communicate with them directly and not through an interpreter. I want them to see that they can talk directly to me and that I can understand all the intricacies of their situation. In addition to building trust, I believe my clients see that my dedication to learning their language is directly in line with my dedication to providing them the best service possible and it is an important step in showing them that I consider them equals and worthy of being here in the United States with me. Even though I can already understand, speak, read, and write Spanish well, I want to advance my skills even further. That is why I’m going back to study more Spanish in Costa Rica this summer to concentrate not just on Spanish, but also on words and phrases used specifically in immigration law.

Congratulations to Michelle on her 2 year work anniversary!

Michelle has done a little bit of everything throughout her time at Solano Law Firm. She is currently an Administrative Assistant whose top priorities include client on boarding, processing all incoming and outgoing mail (it’s a lot!) tracking payments, and preparing work permit and DACA applications.

She plays a crucial role in helping the New Client Services team and Legal Team provide services to our clients. Every client has at some point worked with Michelle.

Alert: Important Changes to Immigration Interviews
If you live outside the Metro Atlanta area, your USCIS Interviews (not Immigration Court) may be scheduled at the USCIS Montgomery office.

The USCIS Montgomery office has been asked to help USCIS Atlanta, due to backlogged interviews and in an effort to reduce overall processing/wait times for the Atlanta office.

MANTÉNGASE FUERA DE LA CÁRCEL: CONSEJOS PARA EVITAR SER ARRESTADO ESTE VERANO
Después de trabajar con miles de clientes, notamos una tendencia: más personas son arrestadas mientras conducen durante el verano en comparación con el resto del año. Es sobre los días que son más largos con luz del día, vacaciones de verano, fiestas y actividades de verano al aire libre, hace que las personas conduzcan más a menudo y, por lo tanto, aumenta la posibilidad de ser detenidos. Muchas personas que son indocumentadas conducen sin licencia, incluida la mayoría de nuestros clientes detenidos. Aconsejamos a nuestros clientes que se abstengan de conducir sin una licencia porque es ilegal y con demasiada frecuencia lleva al arresto de ICE y deportación.

Recuerda que estamos viviendo bajo la administración de Trump . La detención de inmigrantes indocumentados está en su punto más alto. Algo tan “pequeño” como conducir sin una licencia puede ser la razón de su arresto, la razón de la separación y las dificultades familiares, la razón por la que su familia pierde su hogar, la razón por la que sus hijos sufren un trauma emocional y psicológico, y la razón por la que regalas todo por lo que has trabajado en los Estados Unidos.

Los agentes de ICE te esperan y te buscan para que cometas un error. La policía local en su condado y estado también los están ayudando. La mayoría de nuestros clientes son arrestados mientras conducen hacia o desde el trabajo y mientras conducen hacia o desde un evento social, como una fiesta, reunión familiar, club nocturno, etc. A continuación, se incluyen algunos consejos para ayudarlo a evitar ser arrestado por conducir sin una licencia:

-Pregunte a alguien que tenga una licencia de conducir que lo lleve.
Cuando vaya a un evento social donde pueda beber alcohol, siempre tenga un conductor designado. Pídale a otra persona que maneje y que se comprometan a no beber y conducir. Puede ser alguien que vaya al evento o alguien que te haga un favor y te lleve allí.

También puedes usar este método para trabajar. ¿Tiene un compañero de trabajo que tiene una licencia de conducir? Pídale que lo lleve y lo traiga del trabajo a cambio de que usted cubra parte de sus gastos de combustible. Obtienes un viaje sin estrés todos los días y tu amigo ahorra en gasolina.

-Utilizar otros métodos de transporte.

Compartir el viaje: puede descargar la aplicación Uber o Lyft en su teléfono celular y usar este servicio para llegar a su destino. La aplicación cobra tarifas según la cantidad de millas que se tarda en llegar a algún lugar. Necesitará una tarjeta de débito o tarjeta de crédito para pagar su viaje. Los conductores no tienen permitido aceptar dinero en efectivo.

Taxi: similar a Uber y Lyft, pero aquí necesita encontrar un “hombre de taxi” de la compañía y la comunidad local para que lo lleve a su destino. Esta opción le permite pagar en efectivo y negociar la tarifa con el conductor. Esto es más común en la comunidad inmigrante que ha sido una fuente confiable de transporte.

Transporte público: esta es una opción para las personas que viven en una ciudad o pueblo que ofrece transporte público como autobús o tren. El beneficio es un viaje de bajo costo y un horario que siempre puede utilizar para planificar su viaje.

Bicicleta: ir en bicicleta al trabajo es divertido y te da la oportunidad de respirar aire fresco. También es un buen ejercicio que te ayuda a mantenerte en forma y saludable. Por último, puede ahorrarle miles de dólares en gastos de gasolina y automóviles.

-NUNCA beba y conduzca. Es así de simple. Estás poniendo en riesgo tu vida y todos los demás que están en público.

Aunque estos consejos pueden parecer un inconveniente, le ahorrará a usted y a su familia el estrés, la separación, el trauma y los gastos en honorarios de abogados y gubernamentales.

Esperamos que ninguno de nuestros clientes sea arrestado por conducir sin licencia o bucear bajo la influencia del alcohol, pero si esto sucede, recuerde llamarnos de inmediato para que podamos notificar a su familia y comenzar a trabajar para que salga de la cárcel.

¡Felicidades a Michelle por su segundo aniversario de trabajo!

Michelle ha hecho un poco de todo a lo largo de su tiempo en el bufete de abogados Solano. Actualmente es Asistente Administrativa, cuyas principales prioridades incluyen el cliente en el embarque, el procesamiento de todo el correo entrante y saliente (¡es mucho!), El seguimiento de los pagos y la preparación del permiso de trabajo y las solicitudes de DACA.

Ella juega un papel crucial para ayudar al equipo de Nuevos Servicios al Cliente y al Equipo Legal a brindar servicios a nuestros clientes. Cada cliente ha trabajado en algún momento con Michelle.

"Alerta: Cambios Importantes en las Entrevistas de Inmigración"
Si vive fuera del área metropolitana de Atlanta, sus entrevistas con USCIS (no el Tribunal de Inmigración) pueden programda en la oficina de USCIS en Montgomery.

Se le ha pedido a la oficina de USCIS Montgomery que ayude a USCIS Atlanta, debido a las entrevistas atrasadas y en un esfuerzo por reducir el tiempo total de procesamiento / espera para la oficina de Atlanta.
