Did you know "The U.S.
National Domestic Violence Hotline
had its
busiest year ever
in 2018, receiving 573,670 calls, texts, and online chats, a
36% increase
from 2017." The increase in calls has been attributed to a greater awareness of and around the issue of domestic violence in our communities.
At FCR, we have also seen an increase in calls to our
24-Hour Hotline.
For the first 6 months of 2019 we have seen a
21% increase in calls
vs. last year.
Thanks to the incredible and generous support received this year from donors, sponsors, volunteers and the dedicated staff at FCR, we continue to be able to help survivors of domestic and sexual violence take the brave first step in keeping themselves and their families safe.

FCR Awarded a Facility Improvement Grant from
The Richard and Susan Smith Family Foundation!

CEO Patricia Kelleher is honored to announce the receipt of a
Small Capital Grant
from the Richard and Susan Smith Family Foundation (The Foundation)! The funds will be used to replace the handicap accessible ramp at FCR's main office at 18 Newton Street in Brockton.
FCR would like to thank the Trustees of The Foundation and offer a special thanks to Amy Hampe, Program Officer and David Rubinstein, Office & Grants Administrator for their support.
The Richard and Susan Smith Family Foundation is committed to effecting permanent positive change in the lives of the residents of Greater Boston, and/or in the Gateway Cities of Brockton, Chelsea, Fall River, Lawrence, Lowell, Lynn, or New Bedford. Preference is given to agencies working in low-income communities.The Foundation awards approximately $14 million annually in grants aimed at promoting greater health, educational attainment, and economic mobility.

On Friday June 21, 2019, FCR DV Advocates Telma Pawlak-SIlva &
Kyle Harrington attended the Jane Doe Coalition Prevention Summit at the
DCU Center in Worcester, MA.
The Summit brought to together a diverse group of passionate advocates, activists, care providers, educators, and students with the purpose of engaging in meaningful dialogue and skill building around the theme of “Communities First: Centering Those Most Impacted”.

Lieutenant Governor, Karyn Polito, and Director of SA and DV Services at the Department of Public Health, Judy Benitez-Clancy, started the day by reinstating the State’s commitment to addressing and prevention violence, and introducing the first violence prevention awareness campaign Massachusetts has launched in 20 years. Keynote Speaker and Director of the Center for Hope and Healing, Isa Woldeguiorguis, spoke to the "significance of the movement the attendees are a part of" and encouraged participants to find productive value in their communities and connections to share with them the "importance of creating communities of belonging".
The FCR team participated in two informative breakout sessions and returned to their work with a renewed commitment to making those who are most marginalized feel their belonging at the center of the anti-violence movement!

We did some cool rock art and listened to some great tunes! The day was a fun collaboration between Brockton Arts, Stacy Adams, The Y, FCR, and The Charity Guild.

For the past few years year, FCR has been fortunate to have the folks at Liberty Mutual volunteer to help make our spaces beautiful and comforting for our clients.
This past May a dedicated team of volunteers of
"Liberty Torchbearers"
gave a much needed fresh coat of paint to our Raynham Visitation Center!
Check out the fabulous blue kitchen where our visiting families gather to share a meal and check-in with each other.

Child Witness to Violence Program
An estimated 15.5 million children
live in a household where violence has occurred at least once in the last year; 7 million children have witnessed severe violence to a loved one. The most recent National Survey of Children Exposed to Violence found that
57.7% of children
experienced at least one exposure in the previous year.
Adverse childhood experiences
(ACEs) such as witnessing family and community violence are linked to negative brain development and future risky health behaviors, chronic health conditions, and shorter life expectancy.
Children who witness violence are also 4 times more likely to perpetrate violence as an adult.

FCR’s Child Witness to Violence (CEDV) program has been a recognized leader in the field since 2000.
We know that
after witnessing an incident of family violence, a child’s best hope is to bond with another caregiver(s) and experience the nurturance that a caring and compassionate relationship can provide
. A caring relationship can help the child deal with his/her feelings of fear and guilt, and guide that child to understand that his/her feelings are normal, while encouraging that child to engage in activities and plan strategies that will help him/her stay safe and develop the resiliency that will lead to healthy growth and development.
Here at FCR, our caring therapists and advocates
work with children for as long as it takes
to lead that child from fear and despair to hope for a brighter future. They also work with the child’s caregiver(s) to help them understand why a child may exhibit angry or anxious behavior, and how the parent or caregiver(s) can help that child develop positive coping skills and healthy relationships with others.
In
FY 2018
, the FCR CEDV program provided comprehensive child witness services, including clinical services, to
119 youth ages 2.5 -17 years
. Children and youth received direct services from clinicians and interns, including clinical counseling (individual, sibling group and family), safety planning, advocacy, case management and crisis support.
In addition to these youth served, the CEDV provided groups throughout the Brockton Public Schools on the topics of healthy relationships, self-esteem, conflict resolution, positive decision making and violence prevention.

Congratulations to Nicole Modes, M.Ed., FCR's new
Director of Mental Health Services!
|
FCR’s new Director of Mental Health is not new to FCR nor to the Brockton area.
Nicole Modes
was born and raised in the community of Brockton. She started with FCR in 2008 as a volunteer for her Service Learning Project while at Bridgewater State University (BSU) pursuing a Bachelors of Science Degree in Psychology, with a Social Welfare Minor. In the Spring of 2014, Nicole began her work at FCR as a Clinical Intern while working on a Masters of Education in the Mental Health Program at BSU, graduating in Spring of 2015. Because she was such a wonderful intern, we hired her as a clinician once she graduated!
Nicole has experience working with diverse populations of clients who experience a range of social inequities. She has worked to develop relationships with community providers helping to inform her work with clients. Nicole is passionate about social justice and strives to help empower clients to achieve their goals and connect them with resources that they seek to help prosper. Nicole is dedicated to working with clients from marginalized populations and survivors of domestic violence and other forms of trauma, with a strong interest in working with adolescents and young adults. She is proud and humbled to serve clients from the community in which she was raised.
Nicole has been, and continues to be, an extremely valued member of the FCR team. She has enormous enthusiasm and an unrelenting positive attitude about her work and her profession. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to reward her with a promotion to a Director position at FCR.
