Good luck to our Graduating Seniors!
Dear NCHS Community,
Thank you for another wonderful and productive school year. I can’t thank everyone enough for your endless hours of volunteering, organizing, donating and doing whatever was necessary to support students— both at school and at home. Special thanks to our PFA who, as usual, went above and beyond the call of duty to provide whatever was necessary to add to our students’ already rich school experience.

I would like to thank our hard-working and caring New Canaan High School staff members who have made a huge difference to our students. Their commitment is outstanding and our kids are the beneficiaries. We have watched our students grow academically, emotionally, and socially. Thank you for providing rich, engaging, and well-rounded experiences. These experiences could not occur without your endless energy, skills, and devotion. Thank you and well done to an incredible group of professionals.

A special thank you to Therese Chaisson who is retiring this year. Therese has given 24 years of exemplary service to New Canaan High School, most recently in the Library. Our hope is that she now has more opportunity to travel, play golf, read and enjoy more time with family and friends. We wish Therese a happy and healthy retirement! In addition, we would like to wish our nurse, Kim Bean, a fond farewell. We will miss you but wish you the very best in your new home in Florida.

A final word to our New Canaan High School students: Thank you for all your hard work throughout the school year. I am grateful for your joy, kindness, and amazing talents. Best wishes to the Class of 2019! Together we’ve learned much and shared experiences that will long remain with us in the years to come. We look forward to celebrating you at your graduation on June 18th! We will miss you—please come back and visit.

Everyone have a safe and happy summer break. Until next school year, here’s wishing you love, laughter, and learning.

All the best,

Bill Egan

NCHS Athletic Department
A Letter from our Athletic Director
Congratulations to our spring athletes! It has been a fantastic spring season for the Rams!

Congratulations to Boys Lacrosse — FCIAC Champions with an 8-7 win over the Wilton Warriors. This was the team’s 10th overall conference championship and first since 2013. Senior goalie and co-captain Carl Mazabras was named MVP of the game.

Congratulations to Girls Lacrosse for a fantastic season (15-4). The girls played Darien in the FCIAC Championship last week, losing 7-12 in the league final.

Congratulations to Girls Golf for their perfect season, 15-0! They play in the CIAC Girls Golf Championship on June 4th. Go Rams!

Boys Volleyball is seeded 5th in the CIAC Class M tournament.

The athletic department has two very important events left on the calendar. Meet the Coaches night on June 11th at 6:30pm. This is an opportunity for all rising 9th grade student-athletes to meet the NCHS Head Coaches and find out everything they need to know for September. And last, but certainly not least, we will honor our graduating seniors on June 17th at 12:00pm. All senior athletes and their parents are invited. We recognize and honor all our athletic achievements from the school year.

As we finish up the school year, I want to wish everyone a safe and restful summer!

Go Rams!

May 6th BOE Meeting

Senior Internships
Ms. Bianca, the coordinator of the Internship program, presented the data for this year’s internships. Overall, 94% of seniors are participating in the program this year which begin on May 21st. There were 53 students that “self-assigned” an internship by finding their own and having it approved. The other 249 students vied for the other 261 available internships under 30 different categories. Popular categories include general business, marketing and nonprofits. There are also 80 internships available throughout the schools in the district as well as Central Office. Applications were accepted between November 19th and December 14th and in January, interviews were given to each student. They were asked to rate their top 7 choices and from that, 161 students received their first choice, 37 received their second choice, 13 received their third choice and 38 students received their fourth choice. All students in the program then had to attend two training sessions and a lecture by author Ben Carpenter. The training included important information such as email etiquette, sexual harassment training and dress codes. Students are also required to do a weekly reflective journal for which they will receive a weekly email reminder to complete.
Students who are not participating (approximately 6%) will attend the lecture with Ben Carpenter and also learn valuable skills such as creating a resume, creating LinkedIn profiles and practicing interviews. They will continue in their courses through the end of the year.

A Vision of the Graduate
One of the district goals this year was to create a committee of a variety of stakeholders to research and begin to develop a vision of the graduate. The initial committee was comprised of teachers from all schools as well as district coordinators, department chairs and administrators. Dr. Jill Correnty shared the committee’s findings on what a graduate would need not only in the educational world but in the business world as well. To prepare for their first meeting, they pre-read articles, researched districts that had their vision of a graduate already in place and looked at job descriptions to see what companies are looking for in a graduate. They worked together to identify lifelong skills they felt would be necessary for all students to have when they graduate. From there, they decided which of those skills would be teachable, transferable and measurable. The skills and dispositions that came to the forefront were effective communicator, resilient, critical thinking, problem solving, adaptable and emotionally intelligent.
