School News

Over the weekend and these past few days that we had originally scheduled for Commencement, our thoughts were with the Class of 2020 but also on many other things happening in our city and society. The student writers for The Academy Life penned an eloquent editorial. You can also read Head of School Melissa Soderberg's letter to our community and an email to upper-schoolers from Dean of Students Dr. Pascal Losambe.

Several alumni have recently been recognized in various school efforts to honor those working on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. One was Dr. Robert "Brownie" Schoene '64, who practices clinical pulmonary/critical care medicine with his wife Dr. Kim Marquis in San Francisco. Another was Dr. Audrey Young Raut '09, who was featured in a video series by our Student Council (view newly elected officers for 2020-21). Audrey is completing a pediatrics residency in Chicago after graduating from Harvard and Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine.
All In This Together Vikes

This month's "All In This Together Vikes" series features two alumni who share tips for physical wellness at home. First,  Dr. Kyle Alexander '02, owner of Alexander Chiropractic and The Alexander Center for Muscle & Joint Therapy, discusses ways to improve your work-from-home ergonomics based on cases he is seeing during this pandemic. Kyle has built his practices around the concept that treating the entire body, not just the spine, is the best approach to health and wellness. You can find additional resources or contact Kyle through the websites above.

Second,  Chad Underwood '04, owner of Modo Yoga Columbus, offers an exclusive  20-minute yoga session for CA alumni, parents and families to help relieve stress and improve flexibility. "This should give you the gist of what we do and hopefully bring a little bit of peace and clarity to our Academy community during these times," Chad remarked. Virtual classes are currently available via the Modo Yoga Columbus website while the studio is shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you would like to participate in the #AllInThisTogetherVikes series, please email Director of Alumni Relations Melissa Clarke Beckett at beckettm@columbusacademy.org  with information about the content that you would like to share with the Academy community. We look forward to hearing from you!

Save the Date: 12th Annual Golf Outing

Save the date! Our alumni community is invited to participate in the 12th Annual Columbus Academy Golf Outing being held on Monday, September 21, at Columbus Country Club. The golf outing is designed to benefit financial aid in memory of George N. Corey, former Board of Trustees president and father of Michael Corey '01.

Now more than ever, financial aid is a critical priority for the school. All philanthropic dollars raised through this year's Golf Outing will go to the Academy Community Fund, a resource to help families with one-time bridge grants, expanded financial aid and other critical needs as they arise during the 2020-21 school year.

The outing will start at 1:00 p.m., and golfers will have the option to play a casual four-person scramble or a four-person two-best ball for those who would like a little more competition. Registration will open later this month.

If you have any questions or if you would like any additional information, please contact Director of Alumni Relations Melissa Clarke Becket at beckettm@columbusacademy.org.
Supporting Our Academy Community

If you find yourself in a position to support CA at this time, we hope you will do so through the newly established Academy Community Fund. Your gift will provide CA families facing unexpected hardship with expanded tuition assistance so their children can return to school next year. Gifts to the fund will also help the school respond to critical needs as they arise during the 2020-21 school year. This is the school's top philanthropic priority at this time (in lieu of the usual Annual Fund) and it is where your support can have the greatest impact. You may donate at any time by clicking here, or mark your calendar for The Columbus Foundation's online giving event, The Big Give  starting on June 10 at 10:00 a.m. and going through 11:00 a.m. on June 11, when your donation can be boosted with bonus funds provided by the foundation and its partners.
Sports News

"Through the environmental branding of our athletic entrance, we celebrate our students' sportsmanship in action because this positively shapes our collective experience," says Director of Athletics Jason Singleton about new installations created by TENFOLD, the award-winning strategy and creative firm owned by Academy parent Rachel Friedman. "Just like our students, our space now tells a well-rounded story. What we stand for at Columbus Academy is evident: we're all on-board together. Welcome to our ship!"
