Is the Georgia primary meltdown a warning for the November election?
ATLANTA
Associated Press
The long-standing wrangle over voting rights and election security came to a head in Georgia, where a messy primary and partisan finger-pointing offered an unsettling preview of November's contest, when battleground states could face a record turnout.
Many Democrats blamed Georgia's Republican secretary of state for hours-long lines, voting machine malfunctions, provisional ballot shortages and absentee ballots failing to arrive in time for Tuesday's elections. Democrat Joe Biden's presidential campaign called it "completely unacceptable."
Georgia Republicans deflected responsibility to metro Atlanta's heavily minority and Democratic-controlled counties, and President Trump's top campaign attorney decried "the chaos in Georgia."
It raised the specter of a worst-case November scenario: a decisive state, such as Florida and its
"hanging chads" and "butterfly ballots" in 2000, remaining in dispute long after polls close. Meanwhile, Trump, Biden and their supporters could offer competing claims of victory or question the election's legitimacy, inflaming an already boiling electorate.

Peaceful Protests around Cobb County (MDJ News Source)
On Saturday afternoon, protests in Smyrna, Marietta Square and east Cobb drew hundreds more.
Two separate groups of protesters gathered at Marietta Square holding signs that read "Black Lives Matter" and chanting the names of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, a black woman killed in her own apartment by St. Louis police.
"I think for us its very important to spread the message that's all the way down in Atlanta and all the way across the nation up to our small town in Marietta," said Samantha Cook, who organized one of the protests at the square.
Cobb Police Department takes stand against racism and brutality
The Cobb County Police Department takes a firm position against all forms of racism and brutality. The chief, officers and command staff take their oath very seriously.
We hold firm to that calling to serve each and every member of the community with the utmost respect. And we stand behind our words with our daily actions as we serve ALL of Cobb County.
Mableton boosters wary as Smyrna eyes annexation
MDJ News
Smyrna could leapfrog Marietta to become the largest city in Cobb County should it annex areas considered in a recently published study.
The study was approved by the City Council in August 2017 at a cost of $45,000.
Mayor Derek Norton will appoint a committee Thursday to review the study, which analyzed the financial impact of annexing parts of Mableton and other adjacent communities.
Smyrna currently occupies about 15 square miles, Norton said. The four areas under consideration for annexation total almost 10 square miles.
If annexed, they would bring the city's population to about 92,000, according to the study. Smyrna had more than 57,000 residents as of 2017, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Galt Porter, a member of the South Cobb Alliance and chair of t
he Cobb Planning Commission, is skeptical.
Porter said annexation of the land eyed by the South Cobb Alliance would be a blow to the group's efforts to incorporate Mableton.
"Smyrna wants to take the higher dollar stuff for the most part and not necessarily get the parts that are going to need more work," he said. "They want to grab the tax base but not necessarily invest in it."
VA specialty clinic in Marietta to start construction this year
MDJ News Source
A specialty clinic for veterans could start construction as early as this summer, according to a developer building the facility.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' Cobb County Multi-Specialty Clinic, planned for 1161 Bells Ferry Road in Marietta, is closer to being built after it was re-bid last summer, and is awaiting the Marietta City Council to approve plans for the site.
The new facility will provide specialty services including primary care, mental health, radiology, audiology, eye and dental, said Gregory Kendall, public affairs officer for Atlanta VA Medical Center. The clinic is designed to serve 17,000 veterans who receive services in Cobb County, and will have 200 employees, he said.
JUNE IS MEN'S HEALTH MONTH
June is Men's Health Month, a national observance used to raise awareness about health care for men and focus on encouraging boys, men and their families to practice and implement healthy living decisions, such as exercising, eating healthy, and caring for their mental health. Here are some suggestions to get you started!
Tweak your diet: Men's Health Month is a great opportunity to change the way you eat. Cut back on alcohol this month or up your intake of healthy fermented foods like sauerkraut and kefir. You can do anything for a month, and if you do it for a month, you can do it for life!
Set some goals: Use this month to take stock of your health now and think about where you want it to be. Do you want to lose weight? Gain muscle? Simply eat more vegetables? Set small and achievable goals and work with your doctor to make them a reality.
Mind Your Mental Health:
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, men with mental illnesses are also less likely to have received mental health treatment than women. Make sure you are taking care of your mental health as well as your physical health. If you or someone you know needs help, contact Cobb County Community Services Board. We help those who are uninsured and underinsured.
