Help Keep Your Recycling Program Going

The  NC Division of Environmental Assistance and Customer Service (DEACS) announced a new grant funding opportunity available to North Carolina local governments and private recycling businesses through the COVID-19 Recycling Relief Grant Program.

Proposals are now being accepted for projects to purchase equipment and/or resources to support residential recycling programs that have been stopped or impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. DEACS is seeking grant projects that support or improve an existing recycling program operated by a local government or a private recycling business. Applicants may request up to $20,000 in state grant funding and are required to provide a cash match equivalent to at least 20 percent of the requested grant funding.

Eligible applicants include local governments OR private recycling businesses. When evaluating proposals, DEACS will prioritize residential recycling programs collecting traditional recyclable materials such as paper, plastic, metals, and glass.

DEACS will accept applications on an ongoing basis while funding is available, and applicants should speak with a DEACS representative about viable grant projects before submitting.

Vecoplan Increases Focus on Paper  Market
Facility and Staff Expansion Occurs to Support Company Growth

Vecoplan, LLC has invested in its Archdale, NC facility and new staff members to increase focus on the paper and document shredding markets.

Vecoplan, LLC, a subsidiary of Vecoplan AG located in Germany, has expanded its NC manufacturing and assembly facility by 7,000 square feet to increase production capacity for the mobile shredding market. "After making available a truck product with a 'pierce-&-tear ̓ shredder, the uptick in sales meant we needed more space for production. Our single-shaft-rotor shredder is still available and continues to be available to those that need versatility and high security shredding. With the combined sales volume of the two products, we needed to add the square footage to support our customer pipeline," explains COO Len Beusse.

Ready Set App Contest Winners Feature Recycling App
Chapel Hill High School Students Win 2nd Place with Re cycling Tool

Ready, Set, App! challenged high school students across North Carolina to develop a mobile app to solve a problem in their school or community. The teams competed virtually, and each member of the winning teams received prizes. The contest helps students develop and use three key skills: mobile app development, professional and personal development and interpersonal and soft skills through teamwork development.

The Second Place prize went to Team EcoEye from Chapel Hill High School in Orange County. Team members Ayden Xu, Savannah Xu, Valerie Ziegler, and Maya Gilliom developed an app to raise awareness about recycling and help people know how to properly dispose of different kinds of waste. The group was led by advisor, AP Computer Science teacher Garrison Reid.

"This contest pushes students to help solve problems in their own communities while honing the skills they'll need to succeed in the world of work," Gov. Roy Cooper said. "Congratulations to the winners, you are tomorrow's leaders and we can see from your work that you will do great things in the future."   Congratulations CHHS students, you're first place in our eyes!

Recycling is Essential in Nation's Supply Chain
Most Consumers Aren't Making the Connection

The Carton Council revealed new research which shows that despite the highly publicized paper shortages, most consumers fail to make the connection between their recycling of paper at home and its value in providing feedstock to help make new paper products. According to a national survey conducted last month, 33% of consumers reported they thought recycling might help with shortages but weren't sure how much. While 18% felt recycling had no impact at all on alleviating shortages, 13% were unsure and had not thought about the connection.

The good news is regardless, residents report they are keeping up their recycling during the pandemic. Almost one-third of consumers (29%) report they have been recycling more during the pandemic and 56% have been recycling the same amount.

Got a Milk Shirt?
Mi Terro Re-Engineers Excess Milk Into Eco-Friendly Products

Are you tired of sending your food waste to a landfill and polluting our environment? A Los Angeles-based biotechnology company called Mi Terro has developed an innovative solution to rescue excess milk and re-engineer it into eco-friendly products.

Through Mi Terro's patent-pending new technology, it has developed an innovative solution to rescue excess milk and re-engineer it into fiber. This can then be used to make eco-friendly products and offer a sustainable and environment-friendly substitute to plastic.

While it starts with milk, in the future the technology can be applied to all protein-based waste. The process requires 60% less water than organic cotton, and it is entirely non-toxic with no chemicals used during production.
