Online Musical Events!!
As you know, the impact of COVID-19 on our communities of Todos Santos and Pescadero has been harsh. The mandatory isolation and resulting work restrictions mean that many have lost the income needed to feed their families. And, most of our local health care providers are financially tapped out and unable to procure basic Personal Protection Equipment (PPE’s) for first responders and clinicians.

However….
The COVID-19 experience is teaching us that the people of Todos Santos and Pescadero are deeply dedicated to helping every member of our communities. Because of the current need and boundless energy of community volunteers, three local non-profit groups are coming together to raise funds in a fun and exciting way! The Palapa Society of Todos Santos, A.C. has joined forces with A.C.T.S. and Padrino Children’s Foundation to create
Todos Unidos: Relief Fund for Todos Santos and Pescadero
.
During the month of June,
Todos Unidos
will be sponsoring a series of online musical events to raise $300,000 USD in order to meet the projected funds needed to provide food and other critical necessities to a minimum of 1,500 local families until the end of October.
Fortunately, our tiny slice of Baja is visited by and home to many talented musicians. The line-up is still being finalized, but so far, we have over 20 artists confirmed to perform. All proceeds donated during these online “telethons” will go to fund the purchase and distribution of food, diapers, baby formula and relief of other community hardships directly resulting from this COVID-19 crisis.

Standing Ovation to the Palapa School teaching staff.

The Education Program Committee was already proud of our teaching staff before the pandemic, but now proud doesn’t begin to describe how awestruck we are. Director Juan Diego Gonzalez, Ana Castillo, Melissa Chen, Xavier Quiroz, Armando Vasquez, Surisaday Eslava and Martin Osorio have gone above and beyond for their students. The staff have created assignments that cover the required SEP curriculum while allowing the freedom to be creative and pursue topics of interest. Not an easy task from a distance, but our teaching staff have created a way to ensure that each student receives the quality education they deserve. Due to the wide range of socioeconomic statuses at our school, the teachers have created a fair and equal methodology to ensure that education continues throughout this quarantine. They have adapted to the “new normal” of distance teaching by creating weekly assignments that are sent via email, whatsapp, or picked up at the school in sanitized packets.

English and Math teacher Melissa Chen commented “As I adapt the assignments I’m giving to the reality of what it is like for students to learn from home, I’ve been giving students opportunities to involve their family members in their work - whether it is through interviews, trying out new recipes, or playing English language games.” When asked how distance teaching is going, Melissa also commented, “I feel that I’ve gotten to know my students better in the last couple of months, and that they have been able to share more about their lives outside the structure of school.” The quality of work the students are turning in, is a direct reflection of the amount of teamwork, empathy and thought the staff have put into creating their assignments, producing a fully functioning distance learning school.
