The Food Literacy in Preschool (FLIP) Program serves as the first step of the Foodbank's "Feed the Future" programs. The Foodbank hosts its programs at pre-school locations based on the need.
Each month, children ages 3 to 5 participate in a lesson centered around one selected in-season produce item. Lessons are 45 to 60 minutes and include:
- a form of food-based literature
- a food-focused physical activity
- a tasting of the chosen produce item
The children are given a produce item to bring home to their families, with a healthful recipe. Emphasizing nutrient-dense foods focusing on quality rather than quantity; thus addressing the issue that many clients are overfed yet undernourished.
Now that COVID restrictions are lifting, Storyteller is happy to be able to resume our monthly Food Literacy in Preschool (FLIP) program. This program teaches our children about nutrition through hands-on activities such as, songs, matching games, coloring, and stories. The children also learn about food identification and eating with the seasons.
We are thankful our community partner, the Foodbank, for supporting our efforts in serving healthy meals and offering opportunities for our children and families to learn about whole foods.
