June 2021 | Volume 13 Issue 6
Hello!
June is always a busy month for PCAP! Since 1999, Saskatchewan's Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of the Environment have proclaimed the third week in June as Native Prairie Appreciation Week (NPAW) and this year, NPAW takes place from June 13-19, 2021.  Also acknowledging the importance of our native prairie ecosystems are the Cities of Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, and Weyburn. As we all know, grasslands are the world's most endangered ecosystem. NPAW is an important time to recognize, appreciate and celebrate this valuable resource, and also the producers and land managers who carefully steward the land. There is more information about what we have planned for NPAW below!

In case you didn't know, the United Nations declared 2021-2030 the “Decade of Ecosystem Restoration.” The official launch date coincides with World Environment Day on June 5, 2021. The Decade of Ecosystem Restoration represents a worldwide strategy to stop and reverse habitat degradation across the planet. You can learn more here.

After the success of the virtual Native Prairie Restoration/Reclamation Workshop in February 2021, the planning committee is considering doing it again in 2022! We ask that past participants or those interested in attending complete this survey by June 4th. A big thank you to those who have already completed the survey!

If you missed our May webinar presentation, Phil Rose with the Alberta Conservation Association talking about sage grouse and grassland songbirds, the webinar recording is on our YouTube Channel!

This month's NPSS presentation is Corey Olson, from the Wildlife Conservation Society Canada, who will be talking about bat conservation! You can register here!

And finally, we would like to thank our sponsors for their generous support: Camp Wolf Willow, EcoFriendly Sask, K+S Potash, Pembina Pipelines, Saskatchewan Cattlemen's Association, SaskEnergy, SaskPower, SaskTel, Wildlife Habitat Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada, as well as the continuous support of all the PCAP Partners

Stay safe and take care!

PCAP Partner Spotlight...
Redberry Lake Biosphere Reserve
Submitted by Maria Mora Garces, RLBR
The Redberry Lake Biosphere Region (RLBR) was designated in 2000 and is currently the only UNESCO designated biosphere region in the province. BLBR has the mission of working towards the conservation of the biodiversity in the area and has been working on the Species at Risk (SAR) Project since 2019. The Community-Nominated Priority Places (CNPP) for SAR Project represents a long-term management plan aiming to protect multiple species at risk living within the Redberry Lake Biosphere Reserve area and the lands of Mistawasis Nêhiyawak and Muskeg Lake Cree Nation.

This project intends to promote the active participation of First Nations partners by incorporating their local knowledge and worldviews as core guidelines in the project. Youth and knowledge keepers in both communities have been participating at different events and activities. For the youth, introductory virtual and in-person workshops were held at the Muskeg Lake School and the Mistawasis Nêhiyawak High School. Topics such as the meaning of species at risk, the main threats affecting species in the Aspen Parklands of Saskatchewan, and some actions to protect species are risk were shared with the kids of grades 6, 7, 9, and 10.

Knowledge keepers also are part of the project. In both communities, an online survey was adapted and developed to interact with knowledge keepers due to the COVID-19 restrictions. The survey collected people’s perceptions about species at risk, activities in which they would like to take part, and reflections about the role every person in Mistawasis and Muskeg Lake have towards species at risk. The results of the survey will guide the SAR project and how to best incorporate local knowledge and foster community involvement.
