Greetings!
Welcome to our final formal newsletter of our training year! Below, we want to highlight our June training, Demystifying Legislative Processes for Community Change, led by our partners at the Massachusetts Public Health Association. This training will explore best practices for engaging with the local policy arena in Massachusetts. We hope to see you there!
Since this is our final newsletter until the Fall, we want to say a huge thank you to all of you who have attended our virtual trainings, read our newsletter, and shared our events and opportunities. We feel so very lucky that we were able to keep our work moving forward this year, despite the barriers of the Pandemic, and are grateful that you came along for the ride.
Have a wonderful, safe summer! Please take care of yourselves and your families, and we'll be back in August with some exciting announcements about our next batch of trainings.
Cheers! -Daisy, Gina, Kelly, and Tonayo

10:00 AM - 1:00 PM EST
Online via Zoom
Topics: Public health policy for coalitions
Description: State laws and policies can sometimes be hard to find and understand, so what are ways we can make this information more accessible to the communities they impact? If you are new to public health or coalition work, this training will help walk you through how to find public policy information in the Massachusetts State House, how policy can be used to support our work, and the ways in which coalitions can empower themselves to engage with their local policymakers in ways that work for their coalition and its members. There are many ways coalitions and their members can insert themselves in each stage of the process of policy change. The trainers will review how coalitions can find state policies and determine where they fit into the policy change process. Through group work and skill-building, participants will walk away with knowledge to increase their effectiveness and impact within the community, and feel confident in bringing their voice into the local policy arena.
Audience: Coalitions members and leaders, public health professionals that are new to the field.
Trainers: Andrea Freeman and Alexis Walls, Massachusetts Public Health Association
Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to:
- Describe how to find active legislation in the Massachusetts State House.
- Describe the process of how policy is passed in Massachusetts and where there is opportunity to get involved.
- Identify strategies for engaging with state policymakers through multiple avenues and entry points.

It comes as no surprise that the COVID-19 Pandemic has impacted our mental health. But children in particular have experienced a significant increase in mental health issues as a result of COVID-19-related isolation and restrictions. Click the infographic below (from the National Institute for Health Care Management) to learn more about this issue, including some barriers to treatment and proposed solutions to address this crisis.
